Happy World Youth Skills Day
As we continue to commemorate World Youth Skills Day, we highlight another USAID activity that is working to improve the livelihoods of youth. The Takunda activity, implemented by CARE Zimbabwe, in Masvingo and Manicaland provinces, has supported over 1,000 rural youth with skills training. They are learning a variety of vocations such as welding, solar installation, hairdressing, hotel services and catering, masonry, and clothing technology through the technical vocational and education training centers. The training includes in-class, practical, and life skills training. Takunda aims to reach 2,500 youth with vocational training over five years. Dorcas Jiri, a hotel and catering graduate from Buhera, is now employed at a new restaurant. She said: “As a young person living in rural Zimbabwe, trying to get employed was not an easy task. I am very grateful to Takunda, and I am looking forward to (someday) starting my own restaurant.”
Community members say that youth participating in Takunda’s youth skills training program have shifted from bad habits like substance abuse and have had remarkable changes in attitude and behavior.
The Future is in their hands
☺️😊
July 15 is World Youth Skills Day. USAID is committed to promoting youth by equipping them with vocational and financial skills so that they can be self-reliant and resilient. One of our activities, Resilience ANCHORS, trained 59 youth from Bikita and Chiredzi districts, Masvingo province, and Chipinge district, Manicaland province in beekeeping and value-addition honey products such as skin care products and candles. Beekeeping has several benefits for the community. It can improve livelihoods through sales of honey and honey products; it also promotes cross-pollination with crops and other plants and reinforces environmental conservation among communities.
