The hybrid, dual -purpose SASSO T Rainbow, SASSO SUSSEX
SASSO is an internationally rocognised breed that originates from France and has spread to many continents, including Africa, where it has steadily grown in popularity, commanding markets.

*SASSO T-Rainbow & Sussex features*
The dual purpose T-Rainbow and Sussex are more focused on the egg production as the females have an
average lay rate of about 80% when fully fed. In order to have a layer that performs this well, the
males and females must be separated as soon as possible from around 3-4 weeks of age. Low cost Point of Lay pullets can be produced by rearing
the female TR together with the males on Sasso feeds then moving them over to layer grower feed once the roosters have been sold after 10 weeks. The males grow fast and can be slaughtered at
2.2kg - 2.5kg in 9-10 weeks when well fed.

*behavioural Characteristics of SASSO*
SASSO are very inquisitive and active which is what makes them such efficient scavengers; it’s one
of their main strengths. SASSO birds are very different socially compared to Ross broilers hence
they need different management.
• SASSO need less lighting as per the lighting table, leading to more rest periods. This stops them from becoming irritable/ stressed. During these rests they digest and sleep.
• SASSO can’t be confined with no feed or activity, they will get up to mischief. Include
perching bars, scratching space and things to play with like hanging cds, cabbage leaves etc.
But preferably give them time to range freely
• SASSO can be fed using cheaper home made feeds but they are not miracle chickens. If they
eat just maize and other cereal crush, they will have a craving for vitamins and minerals which they might seek through cannibalism if it’s not addressed. Make sure they h

*HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE ARRIVAL OF YOUR DAY OLD CHICKS TO HAVE BETTER RESULTS. AND WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT BROODING AND HEATING.*

1) CONSTRUCTION OF BROODING HOUSE : Construct the brooding section from the
main poultry. It may be just a tarpaulin, used to cover a section to retain heat or a new separate
house for large scale farmers.

2) SIZE OF BROODING HOUSE: The brooding section should be of small size, like in our
own brooding section, we use 15fts x 6fts to to brood 400 birds conveniently for 12 days before
transferring them to the main poultry. Brooding sections shouldn't be too tight or too congested
and shouldn't be too open. This will enable young birds to share body heat.

3) HEAT FOR DOC: Source of heat in brooding is one of the paramount needs of young
birds. DOC are young and unable to regulate their body temperature , as their body temperature
falls down to the temperature of their environment, in other to counter this effect, the room
temperature of the brooding house must be raised to the basal temperature of the birds . In
doing this, there are many other factors the farmer should study as excessive heat can cause
heat stress and resultant mortality. Also Low temperature can cause cold stress that lends to
clustering and stampede, resulting to the death of weaker birds.

4) SOURCE OF HEAT FOR BROODING: The need for heat can't be over emphasized in
brooding. Over the years, farmers have used different sources of heat in brooding. Different
systems and farms, depending on the size of the farm, a farmer can adopt any of the following
heat source in brooding
- Lantern : small scale brooding
- Stoves: medium scale brooding
- Coal: Large scale brooding
- Gas brooders: Large scale brooding

Depending on the size of the brooding house and the number of birds, any of the following is
used. However, the use of lanterns in brooding is grossly inefficient, in most cases, it is used

Origined from Australia and were introduced in USA in 1920. Developed from Black Orpington imported from England. Australorp was bred for egg production with sacrificing too much in size and meat quality

Black Australorp is a hard working chicken. She is one of best egg layer around and can lay more than 5 eggs every week. Their egg laying ability and impeccable manners make them a wonderful chicken that is well suited 4 backyard chicken keepers

Usually Black Australorp chicken become very hardy and they are long lived. They have a resistance to the most common poultry diseases

A point of lay Australorp is at 5 months old. At this age she can start laying eggs.

Australorp reach butchering size, that is to reach full size, in 6 months.

They are a good family chicken choice and do very well with children. Black Australorp love to free range and you will often find them foraging for their own food. If they are well cared for you can expect them to live for 8 or more years
