*No more gym, hairstyle, holiday allowances for ZINARA bosses, as new board
©Jephtah News Online

THE new Zimbabwe National Roads Authority (ZINARA) board has scrapped controversial gym, hairstyle and holiday allowances which were being paid by the administrator to their predecessors, chairperson George Manyaya has told parliament.

Manyaya revealed that the new board had done away with Precious Murove, among many other unqualified directors, in office without relevant qualifications.

Murove was appointed director administration and human resources of the national roads administrator despite only possessing a diploma in Biblical Studies and a Stores Management certificate.

He said this while presenting ZINARA’s transformation journey at a workshop on progress made in the fight against corruption, facilitated by parliament and funded by the African Parliamentarians’ Network Against Corruption (APNAC) in Bulawayo.

Parliament unearthed massive corruption at ZINARA in 2019, with board members, illegally rewarding themselves handsomely during their tenure.

The board approved for itself expensive trips to resort Victoria Falls, gym allowances worth US$4 000 each, top of the range ipads without approval from their relevant ministry, while raking a US$24 500 bill in hairdos for its female members, in two years.

Another US$55 700 was paid to OK Mart for their Christmas groceries, with each member getting a US$9 600 hamper as part of the loot-it-all type of management that was revealed by parliament’s public accounts committee (PAC).

Manyaya revealed that the new board had reviewed its controversial agreements with Intertoll, DBSA, Infralink and Univern whose commissions were questionable high even after last year’s engagements.

“We have new qualified, experienced and an ethical board with new executive managers. There was also realignment of the statutory mandate and introduction of

*‘The people want Liverpool to win more than Manchester City,’ says Guardiola*

Manchester City will be without Rúben Dias, Kyle Walker and John Stones as they seek to retain the title in the final three matches of the season. Pep Guardiola confirmed the defenders’ long‑term absences after the 5-0 rout of Newcastle on Sunday, with the City manager also claiming “people want Liverpool to win more than us” – the title rivals are now three points behind the champions with an inferior goal difference of four.

While Stones and Walker were not in the matchday squad, Dias suffered a hamstring problem during the first half at the Etihad Stadium and had to be replaced at the break by Fernandinho. With Nathan Aké nursing an ankle injury that also makes him a serious doubt for the trip to Wolves on Wednesday, Guardiola may be without four frontline defenders for the trip to the Midlands.

“Rúben, Kyle and John are out for the season,” Guardiola said. “In pre-season is the next time [we will see them]. We have 13.5 players because Nathan is not in perfect condition.”

The 37-year-old Fernandinho will have a vital role in the championship run-in. “A lot [of importance],” Guardiola said. “Otherwise, it’s [the youngsters] CJ Egan-Riley or Luke Mbete[-Tabu]. In this situation it’s not a problem, Rodri can play there. We have the ac

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has buckled under pressure and has revoked the ban on private public transporters.

This comes after his decision to have Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco) as the sole public transporter badly backfired.

Zupco has been enjoying monopoly in the transport sector since 2020 after the government gazetted Statutory Instrument 83 of 2020 putting a blanket ban on commuter omnibuses on the pretext of enhancing Corona virus lockdown measures.

In a hastily prepared speech to counter today’s purported , Mnangagwa said the government would introduce a law allowing private operators to operate and import public transport vehicles duty free.

“Government is proceeding to open up the public transport system for other players in order to complement the services being provided by Zupco, in line with the reduction in COVID-19 cases and the subsequent opening up of the economy,” Mnangagwa said.

“To complement the above measures, the government will allow for the duty-free importation for a period of 12 months for vehicles which meet regulations to be issued. The liberalisation of the public transport system shall be done under terms and conditions to be published by the government,” he added.

Zimbabwe Passenger Association president Tafadzwa Goliati welcomed the move saying the Zupco monopoly was inconveniencing the commuting public.

“The move was long overdue. We thank the President for finally seeing the light. Passengers were waiting for more than two hours in the queue and productive hours were being lost. The economy has since opened up and transport is an integral part of the economy. There is a need for adequate transport for everyone,” Goliati said.

Describing the Zupco monopoly as unsustainable the Zimbabwe Union of Drivers and Conductors president Frederick Maguramhinga said: “Zupco has no capacity to service all routes that is why the

*Student teachers join shutdown campaign*

THE Council of Student Teachers (Cost)will join today’s shutdown that was called for by the Zimbabwe National Students Union (Zinasu).

Cost secretary-general Witness Rurumwa said the student teachers would join the rest of the country in sending the message to the government about the dire state of the economy.

“Our message to the government is very clear. because education is not a priviledge, but a right. We are joining hands with our brothers and sisters in Zinasu on Monday so that the message gets to the government,” Rurumwa said.

Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition president Peter Mutasa echoed the sentiments saying everyone should stay away on Monday.

“Students say they can no longer afford fees after recent hikes while workers are protesting against poor salaries and working conditions. Workers must stay home on Monday,” Mutasa said.

However, Freedom of Rights Under Sovereign party president Manyara Muyenziwa said although the students had the right to protest, the Zanu PF-led government was going to unleash violence on citizens.

“The is a noble cause since students have a constitutional right to protest against the fee hikes by learning institutions. People are suffering. Their wages are erratic. The poor are being made poorer because of the misdirected policies by the regime,” Muyenziwa said.

“The tragedy that we have is of a government which tells people that it is listening, but continues to thwart dissent. The will not be successful because Zanu PF is a system composed of the security personnel. Above all, the opposition politics in Zimbabwe is divided such that they cannot unite for a common purpose,” he added.

*Havana Hotel Death Toll at 31 as Dogs Search for Survivors*

The death toll of a powerful explosion at a luxury hotel in Cuba's capital increased to 31 Sunday evening as search crews with dogs hunted through the rubble of the iconic, 19th century building looking for people still missing.

The Hotel Saratoga, a five-star 96-room hotel in Old Havana, was preparing to reopen after being closed for two years when an apparent gas leak ignited, blowing the outer walls into the busy, midmorning streets just a block from the country's Capitol building on Friday.

Several nearby structures also were damaged, including the historic Marti Theater and the Calvary Baptist Church, headquarters for the denomination in wester
