Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a condition characterized by the thickening and stiffening of the heart muscle, which reduces heart function (heart pumping, electrical system/valves). The expression of NLRP3 inflammasome increases in a stressed heart with a balanced response favoring damage resolution and tissue healing. However, excessive activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome eventually promotes cell death and is associated with cardiovascular disease. Laboratory research found that exposing heart cells (cardiomyocytes) to lemongrass (C. citratus) essential oil promoted balanced NLRP3 inflammasome activation during simulated hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and also regulated oxidative damage, suggesting it is heart protective.

This can be demonstrated with this slide I created that shows just a few of the known receptor or enzymatic targets, pathways, and mechanisms that lavender works within the body.

Anti-aging products for the skin are very popular as people seek to reduce the visible signs of aging and maintain their youthful appearance for as long as possible. One essential oil that is an ideal option to help maintain youthful-looking skin is frankincense. A recent preclinical model found that topical application of frankincense (Boswellia papyrifera) essential oil or frankincense oil solid lipid nanoparticles protected against skin aging caused by exposure to UVB light. It did so by reducing inflammation, increasing skin antioxidant capacity, preserving epidermal thickness, and stimulating the production of procollagen I.
