FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR THE HOLY MONTH OF RAMADAN

Can I do a blood test on fasting?
Injections, patches, eardrops, and eye drops don’t break the fast as they’re not considered to be food and drink – though there are differences of opinion among Muslim scholars on these issues. Islamic law says sick people shouldn’t fast.

Should you fast if you have diabetes?
People with type 1 diabetes shouldn’t usually fast, but people with type 2 diabetes on insulin should be able to. Their doctor may advise adjusting the dose of their insulin, or their insulin type may need to be changed

I get severe migraines when I don’t eat and they get worse when I fast. Should I fast?
People with uncontrolled migraines should not fast. But managing your migraines is possible with the right medicine and certain lifestyle changes. Ask your doctor for further advice on controlling your migraines.

Should you fast if you have high or low blood pressure?
People with well-controlled high blood pressure can fast. Your doctor may advise you to change your medicine to help you take tablets outside fasting times. Someone with low blood pressure who is otherwise healthy may fast. They must ensure they drink enough fluid and have enough salt.

Is fasting harmful when a woman is expecting a baby? Must pregnant women fast?
There’s medical evidence to show that fasting in pregnancy isn’t a good idea. If a pregnant woman feels strong and healthy enough to fast, especially during the early part of the pregnancy, she may do so.
If she doesn’t feel well enough to fast, Islamic law gives her clear permission not to, and to make up the missed fasts later. If she’s unable to do this, she must perform fidyah, a method of compensation for a missed act of worship, such as paying for someone to be fed.

From what age can children fast safely?
Children are required to fast when they reach puberty. It isn’t harmful. Fasting for children under the age of seven or eight isn’t advisable. It’s a good idea to make children aware of what fasting involves and to practice fasting for a few hours at a time

What is hirsutism?
Hirsutism is a common condition in which a person develops an excessive growth of hair. It affects 5% to 10% of women of child-bearing potential.
Women will often develop coarse, dark hair growth on the upper lip, chin, chest, abdomen, or back, instead of the fine hair that normally grows in those areas. Although this condition can cause much distress, it can be treated.

SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
What causes hirsutism?
In many cases, the exact cause of hirsutism is not known. However, there are several conditions that are known to cause hirsutism. These conditions include:
• The natural production of male hormones (androgens). Women naturally produce androgen, however, if a woman's androgen levels are higher than normal, or if her hair follicles are more sensitive to androgens, she may develop hirsutism.
• Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition that causes a woman to produce too many androgens. Women with PCOS may also have acne, irregular or absent menstrual periods, diabetes, weight gain, and/or problems with fertility.
• The hormonal changes of menopause may lead to increased facial hair (moustache and whiskers).
• Other more serious conditions. Hirsutism that occurs suddenly along with other male characteristics, such as a deeper voice, acne or increased muscle mass, may be caused by a more serious condition, such as disorders of the adrenal glands or ovaries.

What are the symptoms of hirsutism?
The main symptom of hirsutism is thick, coarse, dark hair that grows on parts of the body where it would normally grow as fine, thin hair. For example, hair may grow thicker and coarser on the face, chest, back, lower abdomen, upper arms, or upper legs of women.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTS
How is hirsutism diagnosed?
Your doctor will conduct a physical examination to determine the extent of the abnormal hair growth, as well as any other physical signs that may be accompanying the hair growth, such as acne.
If your hair growth is diagnosed as hirsutism, your doctor may perform a variety of tests, including blood tests to check hormone levels, ultrasound to visualize the ovaries and uterus, certain X-rays and additional tests to evaluate your ovaries and adrenal glands, in order to rule out other conditions.
