Nalini Malani
Broken Alice II, 2005
Paint on transparent acrylic sheet

In this work, Nalini Malani employs Lewis Carroll’s fictional character Alice to explore the interaction between women and their environments. Refusing to coalesce into an organized and linear narrative, Malani tells a story which is made interesting through disconnected symbols. The figures reference the Kalighat patta paintings and Manga comics.

Currently on display at Volte Gallery.

A painter, sculptor and enigmatic abstract artist, Evgeny Chubarov translates his emotions and intellectual insights to a new unprecedented visual language. This inspiration led him in creating a visual iconography that thoroughly depicts both a contemporary world and the spiritual traditions of medieval art.

Raghava KK has pioneered a groundbreaking body of diverse works that explore transcendence through the lens of the current digital era.

Featured on CNN’s list of ten fascinating thinkers, authors and provocateurs in 2010, Raghava’s work traverses traditional forms of painting, installation and performance, while his practice embraces new media (artificial intelligence, neuro-feedback, biohacking, board and video games, crypto currencies etc), to express post-human contemporary realities.

Temporal Twist (2016)
_____________

Sheba Chhachhi's Temporal Twist looks at the cinematic story as an object. The post-partition story, is one such object which has become the currency of nation building, producing memory and affect in ways that serve different ideological interests at different moments of history. The cinematic story travels is re-mixed, re-boots wilting identities.

Anxiety twists locks of hair, the edge of the dupatta, the telling of a tale. Tables turn. Prejudice makes its own convolutions.

Exhibition Opening

Volte Art Projects is proud to present Temporal Twists: A Subversive Metalogue by Sheba Chhachhi.

Wednesday February 1st, 6pm

Temporal Twists: A Subversive Metalogue is Sheba Chhachhi's first solo exhibition in the Middle East. Examining Chhachhi’s remarkable oeuvre in all its diversity over the span of four decades, the show includes seven seminal works created since 1997 featuring photographs, photo-video installations, and her signature animated lightboxes. This exhibition brings together the unsparing and often exquisite meditations on critical questions about gendered bodies, subaltern histories, the relationship between humans and the natural world, and eco-philosophy.

Inspired by narratives, memories, textures, and histories gathered from across the world, Based Upon’s sculptural practice is informed by natural and urban landscapes, explorations of archetypal forms and patterns, and by personal histories woven within spaces.

Based Upon creates momentous conceptual and legacy pieces which blur the lines between art, design, and craft. Its palette of materials is vast and diverse: a culture of material experimentation in the studio allows Based Upon to create artworks whose manufacture is often unfathomable.

Tree of Ténéré by .drift at 2017

15/04/2022

Dutch artists Lonneke Gordijn (.gordijn) and Ralph Nauta () founded studio DRIFT (.drift) in 2007. With a multi-disciplinary team of 64, they work on experiential sculptures, installations and performances.

DRIFT manifests the phenomena and hidden properties of nature with the use of technology in order to learn from the Earth’s underlying mechanisms and to re-establish our connection to it.

With both depth and simplicity, DRIFT’s works of art illuminate parallels between man-made and natural structures through deconstructive, interactive, and innovative processes. The artists raise fundamental questions about what life is and explore a positive scenario for the future.

All individual artworks have the ability to transform spaces. The confined parameters of a museum or a gallery does not always do justice to a body of work, rather it often comes to its potential in the public sphere or through architecture. DRIFT brings people, space and nature on to the same frequency, uniting audiences with experiences that inspire a reconnection to our planet.

Photos from Volte Gallery's post 13/04/2022

For around 300 years, the Tree of Ténéré was fabled to be the most isolated tree on the planet. The acacia was the only tree for 250 miles in Niger’s Sahara desert, and was used as a landmark by travelers and caravans passing through the hostile terrain. The tree sprouted when the desert was a slightly more hospitable place, and for years was the sole testament to a once-greener Sahara.

Based on local environmental factors such as wind and sunlight, the interactivity of Studio DRIFT’s Tree of Ténéré, an installation inspired by the fabled acacia, is enhanced via the use of DRIFT’s uniquely developed swarm algorithm, creating a dynamic choreography. DRIFT utilizes a unique digital modelina method, that simulates the growth of a tree as in nature, incorporating factors such as the work’s specific location, gravity, and incidence of light to create a piece entirely unique to its location.

Do not miss Sheba Chhachhi’s Winged Pilgrims: A Chronicle From Asia, an installation that remains on show at ’ gallery space.

Mapping migration, the animated light boxes and robed pilgrim figures reflect on patterns of movement.

The lightboxes offer retooled fables whose central characters are birds from various mythologies. These birds meet their foil in Chhachhi’s reflection on the 2005 panic surrounding the spread of Avian flu which led to the mass culling of birds around Asia and Europe.
