The Sunnah of Fasting in Sha’ban

“It was narrated that Usaamah ibn Zayd said: I said: ‘O Messenger of Allaah, I do not see you fasting in any month as you fast in Sha’baan?’ He said: ‘That is a month that people neglect between Rajab and Ramadaan. It is a month in which people’s deeds are taken up to the Lord of the Worlds, and I like that my deeds be taken up when I am fasting.’”

Keep Yourself Challenged

Life without challenge is a meaningless life, a life of total boredom. We often hear someone saying: “I’m bored to death.” It is an expression that is equally common among children, teenagers and adults. We all need some excitement in our lives. Often, we wrongly get this excitement through momentary pleasures like television series, video games or shopping expeditions... but what follows is usually more boredom.

However, there are ways to truly eliminate boredom from our lives. We can do this by learning new skills, pushing our limits further, acquiring new knowledge, and feeling that we contribute something meaningful to our surroundings. We need to feel useful to ourselves, our families and our society. We need to fulfil our mission on earth. That's why our internal instincts will not be satisfied with less than continuous achievements. These achievements do not need to be big, but they have to be ongoing and cumulative. They need to be meaningful, at least to us. They need to be part of our lifelong quest to develop our potential and seek the pleasure of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He).

This is why a very important part of defining your goals is to keep yourself constantly challenged. If your objectives are too easy to reach, you will get bored after a while and become dissatisfied. As soon as you reach your goals, you might lose interest in them, feel unmotivated and lose momentum. On the other hand, if your challenges are well suited to your abilities, and if you are gradually meeting your goals, you will be self-fulfilled and satisfied. Constantly meeting your short-term goals gives you the required stamina and driving force to continue your pursuit of bigger and higher goals. It gives you the excitement and delight that is necessary to stimulate your willpower and keep you going.

“And whosoever has Taqwa of Allah, He (Allah) will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine.” [ 65:2-3]

Memorize this Dua & Recite it Frequently

Shahr bin Haushab reported: I asked Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), "O Mother of the Believers! Which supplication did the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) make frequently when he was in your house?" She said: "He (pbuh) supplicated frequently: “Yâ muqallibal-quloobi, thabbit qalbee 'alâ deenika” (O Controller of the hearts make my heart steadfast in Your religion)." [Riyâd-us-Sâliheen, hadeeth 1489]

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “Every Tasbîhah (saying ‘SubhānAllāh’) is a charity, every Takbîrah (saying ‘Allāhu Akbar’) is a charity, every Tahmîdah (saying ‘Alhamdulillāh’) is a charity, every Tahlîlah (saying ‘Lā ilāha illAllāh’) is a charity, enjoining what is good is a charity, forbidding what is evil is a charity…” [Sahih Muslim]

“...the way a Muslim saves himself in life from lusts and desires and leads a pious life with fear of Allāh, this world is a prison for him because he is fettered in the chains of rules and regulations, while a disbeliever is free from all kinds of restrictions...and this is how this world is a Jannah for him. The purpose of this Hadith is to induce Muslims for the preparation of Al-Ākhirah (the Hereafter) and prevent them from unlawful luxuries of this world.” [Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf in his commentary of Riyād-us-Sāliheen]

( ياأيها الناس إن كنتم في ريب من البعث فإنا خلقناكم من تراب ثم من نطفة ثم من علقة ثم من مضغة مخلقة وغير مخلقة لنبين لكم ونقر في الأرحام ما نشاء إلى أجل مسمى ثم نخرجكم طفلا ثم لتبلغوا أشدكم ومنكم من يتوفى ومنكم من يرد إلى أرذل العمر لكيلا يعلم من بعد علم شيئا وترى الأرض هامدة فإذا أنزلنا عليها الماء اهتزت وربت وأنبتت من كل زوج بهيج ( 5 ) ) .
( ذلك بأن الله هو الحق وأنه يحيي الموتى وأنه على كل شيء قدير ( 6 ) وأن الساعة آتية لا ريب فيها وأن الله يبعث من في القبور ( 7 ) ) .

Sahih al-Bukhari 1145 - Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: "Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?"

"And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station." - (Quran 17:79)

Great parental advice from the fourth Rightly-guided Caliph (رضي الله عنه وأرضاه)

{ثُمَّ سَوَّاهُ وَنَفَخَ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِهِ ۖ وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ السَّمْعَ وَالْأَبْصَارَ وَالْأَفْئِدَةَ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ} [السجدة : 9]
Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His [created] soul and made for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful.[32:9]

We utter words of love and promises that we are often unable to fulfill, but our parents are the only ones who nurtured us with unconditional love for years, silently.

قال رسول الله عليه وسلم: (لو يعلم الناس ما في النداء و الصف الأول ثم لم يجدوا إلا أن يستهموا عليه لاستهموا). متفق عليه .

{وَالَّذِينَ إِذَا فَعَلُوا فَاحِشَةً أَوْ ظَلَمُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ ذَكَرُوا اللَّهَ فَاسْتَغْفَرُوا لِذُنُوبِهِمْ وَمَن يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَلَمْ يُصِرُّوا عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلُوا وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ} [آل عمران : 135]

" And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know". [3:135]
