Before she landed in Austria, Ruby interned at the Global Initiative of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights ( ) and founded ‘ARTVOCACY’, a club promoting human rights through the arts in Nairobi. This week marks the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki -- the world's first nuclear attacks that obliterated hundreds of thousands of people. As the number of survivors dwindles, the two cities remain steadfast in their efforts to keep the story of the horrific destruction alive.
The U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945 and followed three days later with an attack on Nagasaki. At the time, Hiroshima had a population of 350,000 and Nagasaki 240,000. By the end of that year, an estimated 140,000 people had perished in Hiroshima and 70,000 in Nagasaki.
The US never apologized for these war crimes 😪
If we say never again there has to be justice to the victims as well!
We have to fight for the abolishment of all nuclear weapons, because we believe in „ right to live“
Sending compassion to Beirut. What terrible shocking incident through apparent negligence! 😪😡😪

Srebrenica to Host Coffee-Cup Memorial for Genocide Victims | Balkan Insight Artist Aida Sehovic’s travelling memorial installation of masses of small traditional ceramic cups that are filled with Bosnian coffee for victims of the 1995 genocide will be set up in Srebrenica as the 25th anniversary is commemorated.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide. On July 1995, more than 8.000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed by the Bosnian Serb Army. The massacre of Srebrenica became the symbol of the failure of the international community to protect the civilian population. Why is it important to keep talking about Srebrenica? Because human rights matter always and everywhere , we have to fight for the respect and implementation of human rights every day. Communities like the Rohingyas, Yesidi, Uighurs and others are endangered and we have to stand up for their rights. We have „to nip things in the bud“ and fight hate and racism. Today we are specially mourning with the people of Srebrenica in Bosnia and Hercegovina.
International Day in Support of Victims of Torture 2020
_____________________________________________
On June 26, 1987, the Convention against Torture came into force, this was an important step in the process of globalizing human rights and acknowledging that torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment should be universally illegal. In 1997 the United Nations General Assembly decided to mark this historic date and designated June 26 each year as the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.
This day serves as a reminder to people that human torture is not only unacceptable – it is also a crime. International law unequivocally prohibits torture in all instances, and yet, torture continues in many countries, even those where it is criminalized. Its pervasive consequences often go beyond the isolated act on an individual; and can be transmitted through generations and lead to cycles of violence.
On this International Day, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated: „Torturers must never be allowed to get away with their crimes, and systems that enable torture should be dismantled or transformed.”
Today, let us honor the victims of torture and commit to work to achieve a world where such abuse cannot happen!
World Refugee Day 2020
_____________________
On 4 December 2000, the UN General Assembly in Resolution 55/76 decided that 20 June would be celebrated as World Refugee Day. In this resolution, the General Assembly noted that 2001 marked the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees.
This World Refugee Day is marked in the midst of dramatic social change, the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent anti-racism protests have shown us that we need to fight for a more inclusive and equal world, and that everyone can make a difference. This year, the world should be reminded that everyone, including refugees, can contribute to society and in the effort to create a more just, inclusive, and equal world.
As the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, said in his message: “Today and every day, we stand in unity and solidarity with refugees and recognize our fundamental obligation to shelter those fleeing war and persecution!”

In the wake of George Floyd's death and the ensuing protests worldwide, the music industry is planning to turn June 2 into "Blackout Tuesday," a day to press pause on usual business and turn toward fighting racial injustice. Numerous large music labels (Columbia, Def Jam, Interscope, Sony, and Warner Music Group), as well as iconic musicians such as Quincy Jones and Mick Jagger, have joined the movement that's being shared on social media with the hashtag .
is an initiative created by Atlantic Records exec Jamila Thomas and Platoon’s Brianna Agyemang, and it represents a call for “gatekeepers of the culture” to join “an urgent step of action to provoke accountability and change” and “a day to disconnect from work and reconnect with our community.”
As Thomas and Agyemang write: “This is not just a 24-hour initiative. We are and will be in this fight for the long haul.“
International S*x Workers’ Day 2020
_____________________________
On 2 June 1975, approximately 100 s*x workers occupied Saint-Nizier Church in Lyon, France, to express their anger about their criminalised and exploitative living conditions. On 10 June at 5 o'clock the Church was brutally raided by police forces. Their action made national and international news headlines, started a strike that involved s*x workers from all over France, and created a legacy of activism that is celebrated each year on International S*x Workers’ Day.
Today s*x workers around the world still walk the line between normalised violence against them, demonising social stigma and police intimidation and administrative indifference, while many still face the fear of losing custody of their children.
To increase access to justice for s*x workers around the world, we must build upon the lessons learned from the 1975 occupation and strike. Nobody deserves or should expect or accept violence, oppression and marginalisation, regardless of their background, race, or their work!
A Must for everybody in Vienna who cares for Human Rights 👍
