EVER EVOLVING ENVIRONMENTS
[APPLIED] FOREIGN AFFAIRS

GALERIE GÖTTLICHER
Krems an der Donau

May 11 – July 13, 2024
Opening May 11, 6:00pm

The exhibition “Ever Evolving Environments” at Galerie Göttlicher features two of [A]FA’s long-term projects, located in Ghana. What these projects have in common is the aspiration to create inclusive environments to be lived and appropriated by (human) individuals and communities, with all other living things in coexistence. This implies a multi-scalar approach, from the tiny/hyperlocal to the territorial all is considered equally relevant. Processes of unlearning, testing, and crafting are central - always with the ambition to create alternative spaces, as agents of socioecological change, and of surprising spatial beauty.

The exhibition provides insights into the complex, playful processes, and evolving ecosystems of the projects Tamale Territories Old Airfield (Tamale, Ghana, 2021-), and Haduwa Continuations (Apam, Ghana, 2013-/2023-) by [Applied] Foreign Affairs.

Building Environments:
Architectural Theory beyond a Changing Climate
3rd of May 2024
Symposium
University of Applied Arts Vienna

The “building Environments” symposium will address the current state of architectural theory in the context of numerous ecological crises. If theory is what establishes the relationship between what is present and what can be imagined, allowing us to look forward and backward, then it is the task of architectural theory to consider what remains constant and what changes in the discipline as it addresses current challenges. “Building Environments” asks the participants to think about how environmental issues impact, affect, and shift theoretical work on architecture, landscape and design.
The conversations will draw connections between architectural theory and environmental issues, highlighting ways to consider architecture in relation to climate, energy, extraction, land, and production. The environmental lens on theory provides ways to encompass all elements of building activities, allowing for connections to be made across a wide range of scales, from that of a building detail to those of entire landscapes and cities. It also urges us to consider the representation of the environment in architecture, bringing into view the limits and entanglements of the discipline, drawing new affinities, producing knowledge and advancing the discipline.
In conjunction with the symposium, the exhibition, “Energy at the Threshold of the Visible World,” which brings together historical visualizations of energy along with contemporary works on images and representations of energy, will be opening at AIL – Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab, Georg-Coch-Platz 2, 1010 Wien.

BENDSCAPE goes to CAADRIA 2024!
with and .koupaei

BENDSCAPE, Optimized manufacturing by incorporating tool development and machining in design will be presented at CAADRIA 2024 (April 20th - 26th). The paper is the result of two semesters of work of Afshin Koupaei with his students at the seminar titled Machining PRAXIS in Architecture. Experiments in architectural firms and schools are not always of the same nature. Students of architecture are not necessarily equipped with the knowledge that could be used in the real field to solve the actual computation design and making problems. This article elaborates on an academic experiment attempting to narrow this gap. The project begins with a series of subtractive wood bending experimentations. These studies then provide the foundations for developing a task-specific design and manufacturing toolkit that allows for an accelerated design and making process. To prove the concept, a group of 12 students finalized the design in one day and delivered the final manufactured pavilion in a week.

CAADRIA 2024 is the 29th International Conference of the Association for Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia. CAADRIA 2024 brings together academics, researchers, and practitioners to contribute to the fields of computational design methods, instruments, and processes towards an inclusive future for humans and non-humans.

Grid Realities
Diploma WS 23/24
By Gaowei Zhou .zhou

Enter GRID REALITIES, a fascinating and audacious experiment that invites us to delve into the underlying logic influencing how individuals perceive reality. This initiative sparks crucial discussions about our approach to rules, common knowledge, experiences, standards, and correctness. It challenges the very fabric of our shared reality and prompts us to reevaluate the parameters by which we navigate our existence.
Within the expansive realm of Grid REALITIES, the possibilities are seemingly limitless. Countless realities coexist, each governed by a singular criterion. Nine specific examples, such as "Waiting in the Queue," "Having S*x," "Working for Life," "Social Media On," "Never Stop Running," "Reading Maze," "Spiritual Anchor," "Lie to Truth," and "Music World," serve as microcosms of the limited understanding that people possess. Remarkably, individuals earnestly and conscientiously mould their lives according to these predefined principles.

The fifth and sixth issue of ABSTRAKT explore the medium beyond a mere communicator of architectural and urban designs. It stands as an integral part of the process of probing architectural realities and speculations. How do we conceive and develop architectural concepts through imaging? How does the medium then aid in situating ideas within a broader social, political, cultural and ecological context?

The fifth issue, “Unfolding Visions”, focuses on time-based media and the dimension of duration, while the sixth issue, “Artifacts”, examines drawings and physical models as snapshots of the architectural design process. Featuring interviews with experts working in various media, the issues delve into possibilities, limitations, and emerging workflows. Collectively, these insights offer a nuanced comparison across a spectrum of media.

To mark the completion of this body of work, the exhibition will be launched with a panel discussion, presenting an opportunity to further emphasize and explore the similarities and differences in design practices distinguished by the use of different media. Panelists Uwe Brunner, Sam Jacob, and Olivier P**n will share their insights on the role of medium in a creative practice, as well as reflect on a selection of key topics that have emerged from within the pages of the magazine.

Structural Design Symposium - Fabrication Gap
18.04 -19.04.2024
We know that the construction industry has had virtually no growth in productivity in decades. The sector is responsible for over 15 percent of carbon emissions and over 50 percent of all landfill waste, while we have been struggling to build faster, leaner, and better. Modular construction has largely been unsuccessful. For decades, it has been seen as the best way to industrialize the construction industry, however, apart from a just a few examples, its impact has been negligible, and the desired transformation of our industry has not taken place.
We need a rethink. We need to involve the construction supply chain, which has developed a deep level of industrial production over time, and feed their solutions into the design at a much earlier point in the process. As a part of that approach, we must solve the interfaces between the different trades and systems. In turn, we need to completely rethink the idea of how a kit of parts is put together.
At the symposium we will present and discuss with a broad range of experts an approach that brings all these considerations together. It will integrate supply-chain solutions while also allowing the construction industry to innovate. It will create standards that focus on interoperability and interface solutions while remaining open-source. It will use technology to facilitate the integration of different system solutions.
By closing the fabrication gap, it will allow for the reduction of construction times while also increasing the quality of what we are building. And in designing for an integrated, industrialised construction process, we will allow for individual architectural expression rather than creatng the need for generic standardization.

Circumitus
Diploma WS 23/24
By Anastasia Smirnova

"Circumitus" draws inspiration from Latin, meaning "circle," aligning with its mission to guide individuals through the grieving cycle with innovative, non-religious rituals. The project, situated at Wiener Zentralfriedhof, incorporates small pavilions to support people at various stages of grief, based on the Kübler-Ross model.
The research delves into funeral paths globally, considering factors like time, distance, and specific details crucial in certain contexts. Two additional entrances were added for improved accessibility. Materiality is a key focus, addressing issues of grave removal and environmental impact. The project integrates recycled materials, including rPet fabric and 3D printing with recycled filament. Circumitus aims to transform traditional perceptions of cemeteries by introducing non-religious rituals. The project embraces evolving preferences in disposition and commemoration, incorporating AR technologies for a holistic experience. Pavilions are constructed using recycled materials from the cemetery, reflecting sustainability and the essence of the contemporary era. The design allows individuals the freedom to choose their paths, offering a unique and personalized experience through the stages of grief.

New Narratives of the Existing
Diploma WS 23/24
by Tobias Haas

New narratives of the existing concentrates on the transformation of obsolete building structures through the reconfiguration of cannibalised building components.
The cityscape of many Central European, especially German cities, is shaped by maximised commercial typologies and car-friendly development - many typologies, like department stores and office towers, are suffering from changing customer behaviour.
This raises the question of how to rethink the curation of these obsolete building structures. The search is on for a strategy to exploit the inherent potential of the affected building typologies. The prevalent post-and-beam construction method allows for flexible adaptation, breaking up the dense fabric of corridors and fragmented rooms and flooding the spaces with natural light and air. In a time of rising material prices and diminishing availability, concrete is regarded as a valuable material source at the location of consumption—a repository to feed its own transformation.
To respond to the desired changes in program and space, the project negotiates the existing within three methods. The first is the adaptation of space, in other words, filling the same structure with a new purpose. The second is the subtraction and reconfiguration of the cannibalised building components, i.e. creating voids through deconstruction and reassembling the parts in a different location to create new spaces.
The third is the insertion of newly built implants, in the form of room-in-room upgrades, to extend and contrast the existing fabric, serving specific programmatic and constructional purposes.
A legible articulation of subtraction and addition informs the space. Influences of the process are revealed through materiality and surface characteristics to make the value of the existing resources spatially tangible.

No Name In Here
Flirting. Universal. Cruising. Komos
Diploma WS 23/24
by Bofan Zhou

The project ‘No Name In Here’ attempts to transform a ruined industrial area in Shanghai, through a socio-material process of creating a safe environment for leisure time. It intends to reshape the site into a sanctuary for anonymous encounters that promotes new intimate social contact against traditional family relations.

The project investigates a new aesthetic mode of space that connects different individuals to explore intimate relationships in a complex urban context. It creates a new spatial atmosphere in an attempt to accommodate the contemporary young generation and allow them to develop and maintain meaningful social bonds beyond the norms.
The project “No Name In Here - Flirting, Universal, Cruising, Komos” celebrates gender diversity of the contemporary young generation and creates an open yet safe space to explore intimate relations.

Temporal Dissection
Diploma SS2023
by Saba Mahdavi

The focus of this project is mainly on revitalizing the abandoned industrial zones of the 19th district of Vienna with the adjacency of the residential buildings by utilizing Artificial intelligence (AI) in the design process. My personal curiosity about the details and existing Viennese urban elements caused experiments on ornaments within different typologies and sections of history as a surgical procedure. Tracing, Sampling, and retrieval of the existing ornaments are the underlying logic implemented as the methodology, then AI is utilized to provide hybridization and to unify them all as a cohesive object and apply them at different scales. The level of AI intervention varies; It might create a whole actual space by itself in one part or might remain as an ornamental intervention in another. The Methodology for this project would be testing the idea of AI with the programmatic problem of the site and highlighting the feature of Product Exchange. Unwrapping the facilities of Mistplatz and product exchange together in a new spatial configuration. An orchestration of facilities and pattern slices tied to each other. The intention is to approach a programmatic problem through the lens of AI. Either it is the invasion of AI to the program or the program to the AI.

Our Story

The goal of the Institute of Architecture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and its Dean Klaus Bollinger is to teach architecture as an all-inclusive thought process that puts the future architect in the position to define architecture as a three-dimensional expression of culture. To achieve this, the three design studios of Cristina Díaz Moreno and Efrén García Grinda, Greg Lynn and Hani Rashid closely work together with specialists in the departments of technology, theory and editing within our institute, as well as with specialists from reputable external organizations.

This potential for interaction is realized in closely networked teams that are kept comparatively small to facilitate the transfer of knowledge. In computerlabs and state-of-the-art model shops, the latest technologies are tested in theory and practice. The continuous necessity of re-defining architecture both in theoretical and practical terms should be the main focus of teaching.
