🌍 This was our first day of the Balkan Round Table Committee Meeting, addressing the significant decline in voter support for social democratic parties in the Western Balkans. This crucial topic highlights the urgent need to re-engage with voters, revisit the core principles of social democracy, tackle the challenges faced by these parties, adapt to modern campaign strategies, and ensure the continued relevance and impact of social democracy in today’s political landscape.

🗣️ The day began with the registration of participants at the VETËVENDOSJE premises, followed by warm welcome remarks from RVV representatives. The opening session featured insightful country reports on the current state of social democracy in the region and a dynamic discussion on the challenges and opportunities ahead.

🏛️ A visit to the Assembly of Kosova included an inspiring conversation with Saranda Bogujevci, Vice President of the Assembly, who shared her experiences and insights into the political landscape of Kosovo. The day’s activities also included a poignant visit to the Reporting House, showcasing an exhibition on the Kosovo War and artworks from artists from other conflict-affected regions like Bosnia, Mozambique, and Ukraine. The final stop was the National Gallery of Kosova, where participants admired an exhibition by Albanian artist Gjelosh Gjokaj.

🌟 The first day concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and a strong commitment to revitalizing social democracy in the Western Balkans. Stay tuned for more updates from this transformative event!

🚨 In 2023, the number of refugees worldwide has soared to an unprecedented 120 million. This marks the 12th consecutive year of rising displacement.

‼️ The conflict in Sudan alone has forced 10.8 million people to flee their homes, while 1.7 million have been displaced in Gaza, accounting for 75% of its population.

‼️ Syria continues to endure the world’s highest number of displaced individuals, with 13.8 million people uprooted.

‼️ For the first time in two years, the number of Venezuelan refugees has exceeded that of Ukrainians, with 6.1 million Venezuelans displaced, 97% of whom are in Latin America.

⚠️ These numbers are not just statistics; they represent lives disrupted, families torn apart, and communities in need. Despite these staggering figures, only 5 million internally displaced persons and 1 million refugees managed to return home in 2023.

🕊️ On this International Refugee Day, we honor the resilience and courage of refugees everywhere. Their stories remind us of the urgent need for global solidarity and compassion. Let us stand together and extend our support to those who have been forced to leave everything behind in search of safety and hope.

🏳️‍🌈 A monumental step for LGBTQ+ rights: Thailand’s senate votes to legalize same-sex marriage.

✊ Thailand will become the first nation in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, following the Senate’s approval of a marriage equality bill.

⚖️ The bill, pending royal endorsement, will grant LGBTQ+ couples the same legal rights as heterosexual couples, including inheritance, adoption, and healthcare decision-making.

🌹 This landmark decision marks a significant step forward for LGBTQ+ rights and sets a powerful precedent for other nations to embrace equality.

‼️ Haiti has formed a new government in an effort to restore order in the country. The new cabinet replaces all the ministers from the former Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s government. Henry was forced to step down earlier this year by gangs that control large parts of Haiti.

✊ IUSY welcomes the formation of a new cabinet, as a step towards bringing political stability to a nation that has been plagued by violence and uncertainty for many months. We call on the UN to deploy the security force promised last year to support the new government and the Haitian police in restoring normalcy in the country.

🔈IUSY calls for clean and peaceful elections in Mexico

‼️The International Union of Socialist Youth calls on the Mexican government to guarantee a transparent, clean and peaceful election day in all its territory this June the 2nd.
We have observed with concern the climate of violence that has been experienced during the last months of political campaigns that has resulted in the murder of more than 30 candidates, more than 700 people affected by political violence and the resignation of many more as victims of threats. As an international organization that boosts the most essential principles of democracy, we emphasize that there can only be democracy if there is peace.

🚨There are areas of Mexican territory that have been captured by criminal groups for several years and the current administration has done little to regain control and guarantee the security of the population. Without regaining control of these areas, it would be very difficult to say that people can vote freely and that they can elect their governors and representatives in an independent manner.

📢We therefore urge the Mexican government to guarantee all the necessary conditions so that the population can go to the polls with full certainty that their security will be guaranteed, their vote will be respected and the law will be enforced on June the 2nd.

🌹We hope that the violence experienced during the campaign process does not end up consolidating on election day and that the people of Mexico can have a clean and peaceful process.

🔈IUSY expresses deep concern over the ongoing border delimitation and demarcation process between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan, particularly in the Tavush region of Armenia. This process is being conducted under the threat of aggression from Azerbaijan, which fundamentally undermines its legitimacy and threatens the sovereignty of Armenia.

✊🏼We stand in solidarity with the Armenian people and the ongoing protest movement, which reflects the genuine concerns of Armenian citizens across diverse societal layers. We condemn the brutal use of force by law enforcement authorities to violently repress the peaceful protesters. Therefore, we urge the Armenian government to respect its citizens’ constitutional rights by refraining from the use of disproportionate force and ensuring that their voices are heard without hindrance.

‼️ We call on all stakeholders to condemn Azerbaijan’s actions. Concrete measures, including sanctions, should be taken to hold the Aliyev government accountable for its unlawful use of threats and aggression.

🌍 Today, we celebrate Africa Day, celebrated on May 25, an essential milestone that remembers the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, currently known as the African Union (AU).

🌹 For IUSY, this date has special importance, as it reflects the values of solidarity, equality and social justice that we promote globally.

‼️ Africa Day is an opportunity to recognize and value the rich cultural, historical and social diversity of the African continent. It is a time to highlight the achievements of African countries and the strength of their youth, who fight for a fairer and more sustainable future.

✊ By celebrating this day, we reaffirm our commitment to international solidarity and mutual support among young people around the world. For IUSY, it is essential to support and amplify the voices of young Africans in the search for human rights, democracy and sustainable development.

🫂 Africa Day reminds us that unity and cooperation are fundamental to building a better future, not just for the African continent, but for the entire world.

🕊️ Together, we can tackle global challenges like inequality, climate change and conflict, promoting peace and progress for all.

❗️ The leaders of Norway, Ireland, and Spain formally recognized Palestine as a state.

🕊 This recognition supports a two-state solution, which is essential for lasting peace in the region and the right to self-determination for the people of Palestine. This decision follows the seven-month-long offensive by Israel against Gaza.

🌹 IUSY strongly supports the decision taken by Ireland, Spain, and Norway to recognize the State of Palestine. Amid the ongoing war and humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, with tens of thousands dead and wounded, as well as military invasions and sieges, land confiscation, restriction of movement, arrests, injuries, and the killing of innocent Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. It is crucial to sustain the only viable alternative for a political solution for both Israelis and Palestinians: two states living side by side in peace and security. Sustainable peace in the Middle East and respect for humanitarian law cannot be achieved without ending the Israeli military occupation and the recognition of a Palestinian state.

🌹 IUSY strongly supports the ‘Atin! Ito Coalition’ (‘This is ours!’) as they launch a civilian-led supply mission to Scarborough Shoal on May 15, 2024. The Atin! Ito Coalition is a coalition of diverse civil society groups that is dedicated to amplify the call to defend and protect the West Philippine Sea. This coalition will deliver food, basic supplies, and fuel to the fisherfolk communities and frontliners who tirelessly protect and assert Philippine sovereignty.

🌊 IUSY acknowledges the Philippines’ victory in the arbitral tribunal under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and condemns the ongoing illegal and violent activities conducted by Chinese coast guards in the West Philippine Sea, despite the ruling.

‼️ We are alarmed by the large blockade around the shoal deployed by China ahead of the Philippine civilian mission. This aggressive action poses a threat not only to the ‘Atin! Ito’ civilian mission and the Philippines, but also to neighboring Southeast Asian countries that are located near the conflict area. We urge the international community to closely monitor this show of force by China and ensure that international laws are upheld.

➡️ Despite this threat, the coalition is determined to proceed with the mission. We strongly commend the brave civilians who defend Philippine sovereignty through peaceful means, demonstrating courage and resilience in the face of intimidation.

🔈 IUSY condemns the attack on Rafah by Israel and calls for an immediate ceasefire! The war on Gaza has killed more than 35.000 Palestinians, from which 14.000 are children.

⚠️ The military assault on Rafah has a devastating impact on the 1.7 million civilians, where most of them have been already displaced and are seeking refuge in Rafah.

⭕️ It is imperative that humanitarian aid reaches the Palestinian population in Gaza, which is being blocked by the Israeli government right now. The blockade has resulted in famine, imposing collective punishment on Gaza’s civilians. The use of starvation as a weapon against innocent people is utterly deplorable.

‼️ The international community must put pressure on Israel to end its hostilities and accept a ceasefire immediately.

IUSY stands in support of public education protests in Argentina

✊🏽 In every part of Argentina, there was a historic demonstration in defense of the public, secular, and free education provided by its universities.

🌹Enormous crowds of citizens marched peacefully to support the demand for a national budget that meets the needs of the educational institutions, so they can carry out teaching, research, and study with inclusivity and quality.

📌 The Argentine University Federation, led by member organizations of IUSY and , courageously defended the rights and achievements of the student movement against the abuse of the national government.

🌹 International Workers' Day marks a crucial moment in history, a testament to the tireless efforts of workers worldwide striving for better conditions and fair treatment. As we celebrate this day, we reflect on the roots of this movement, born out of the struggle for an eight-hour workday in the late 19th century. Over the years, the labor movement has made significant strides, securing fundamental rights and protections for workers.

✊ Despite these achievements, the fight is far from over. Inequalities persist, exploitation continues, and workers' rights are still under threat in many parts of the world. As IUSY honors the legacy of those who paved the way for us, we recommit ourselves to the ongoing struggle for social justice and equality.

🌍 IUSY stands in solidarity with workers everywhere, striving to build a future where every individual is treated with dignity, respect, and fairness. Happy International Workers' Day!

📍IUSY stands with the US students advocating for Palestinian justice across US universities, urging an end to the act of genocide in Gaza and supporting their demand for the universities to divest from companies supporting Israeli military actions and illegal Israeli settlements in Westbank.

📌 IUSY is shocked by university administrations’ use of police force against peaceful student protests across the USA, resulting in numerous arrests. The suppression of free speech and assembly under the pretext of maintaining order or combatting antisemitism is concerning.

✊🏼 We strongly condemn the silencing of student and academic voices, along with punitive actions like arrests, suspensions, and expulsions. These actions undermine academic freedom and the mission to foster justice, critical thinking, and civic engagement, which are crucial in a democratic society.

🔉 IUSY stands firmly with students globally, amplifying your demands for transparency, accountability, and justice.

‼️ IUSY persists in advocating for Palestinian freedom, urging an end to hostilities in Gaza and the Israeli occupation and apartheid of Palestine.

🌹 IUSY stands in solidarity with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez during this trying time in Spain. We firmly oppose any attempts to undermine the integrity of Spain’s democracy, including the unjust attacks targeting the Prime Ministers and his family.

🔉 Pedro Sánchez’s commitment to continue leading Spain with even greater strength is a testament to his unwavering dedication to Spain and public service. We commend his determination to uphold democratic values despite facing attacks from the right-wing forces.

📌 IUSY reaffirms its staunch opposition to far-right factions that threaten the foundation of democracy in Spain and worldwide. We stand together in solidarity with all those who continue their fight for democratic principles and strive for a more equal and transparent society.

🕊 Last Thursday marked the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal. This historic event, a military coup turned peaceful uprising, ended decades of fascist dictatorship and colonial wars. What began with idealistic young military captains swiftly evolved into a jubilant movement embraced by the masses. In less than 24 hours, the iron grip of dictatorship was shattered, paving the way for democracy.

🌹 The nickname "Carnation Revolution" stems from the peaceful protesters who placed carnations in the barrels of military guns, symbolizing a powerful defiance against oppression. This year, thousands gathered in unity to commemorate the 50th anniversary.

💪 In the face of rising far-right sentiments, it's crucial to remember the lessons of the Carnation Revolution. Freedom, democracy, and unity are not to be taken for granted. Let us continue to honor the spirit of resistance and safeguard our hard-won liberties.

🕯 Today marks the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, where 1.5 million Armenians were killed by the Ottoman Empire between 1915-1923. The genocide for the Armenian people is ongoing, since the indigenous Armenian population in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) were ethnically cleansed by Azerbaijan from Artsakh.

‼️ IUSY expresses its solidarity with the Armenian people. It’s our duty to preserve the memory and commemoration of the Armenian Genocide, while fighting for justice and preventing new atrocities to repeat. We urge Turkey to recognize the Armenian Genocide and we call on Azerbaijan to stop its aggression against the Republic of Armenia. This is essential in reaching stability in the region.

The roundtable focuses on “Youth Perspective on Continued Armenian Genocide Including Artsakh” where we discuss the impact of the Armenian Genocide and draw parallels with today’s situation in Artsakh
