At our recent sustainability chat, we explored how grassroots organizations are reclaiming underused urban spaces to foster community empowerment and sustainable regeneration.

🏨 Our insightful speakers, Ulrich Fries from Kreative Räume Wien; and Frederik Marroquin from Semmelweisklinik, shared key takeaways on the challenges and opportunities organizations face in securing space, building community, and maintaining independence:

- Organization and clear processes are essential for long-term project success.
- Available urban spaces are vital for empowering individuals to create education and art projects.
- It's challenging to track how many vacant spaces exist in Vienna.
- Private and public stakeholders could make spaces available for community use.

🌏 Last week, Tshin Ilya Chardayre dared us and other participants to discuss the future in the most positive way possible. As part of the workshop titled "The Glorious 2030s," the expert in collective intelligence showed us where our ambitions lie and what we need to achieve them. The workshop, which lasted over two hours, encouraged us to think about initiatives and policies that could bring real change to our communities, countries, and the planet. After envisioning these ideas, we explored other examples that also started as "utopian dreams." Some of them include:

- The introduction of a tax on junk food, similar to those introduced in Hungary and Mexico.
- The development of agro-ecological zones around cities to promote the use of local food products in city canteens, as seen in Liège, Belgium, with the Ceinture Aliment-Terre Liégeoise initiative.
- The compulsory composting following the example of South Korea’s mandatory composting scheme, in place since 2013!

With the goal of ensuring that not everything remains just an idea or a dream, "The Glorious 2030" also prompted us to imagine what should happen first for our dreams to become reality. Thank you to all the participants, and especially to Tshin Ilya Chardayre, for this workshop that left us with a more positive attitude towards the future.
