Groundbreaking ceremony for vis-à-vis

The foundation stone for our project Vis-à-Wien – together with einszueins & Carla Lo – was laid on 22 November, marking the start of construction work.

The project sees the interplay between the subsidised housing and the integrated building group as an opportunity and a spectrum for further possibilities. In addition, the “green heart” in the centre of the residential complex creates a balanced microclimate.

The timber hybrid house combines the respective material properties of timber and reinforced concrete optimally in order to take ecological construction methods into account.

We are excited and looking forward to it!

BigSEE Wood Design Award 2023 for Kindergarten Algund

We are very pleased about the BigSEE Wood Design Award 2023 for the Kindergarten Algund!

A big thank you to the municipality of Algund, the educational team and our great team for this wonderful collaboration.

The BigSEE Awards were created to systematically explore and promote the creative and economic potential of South Eastern Europe. The awards recognise unique and original creative achievements in the fields of architecture, interior design, product design, wood, tourism and fashion.

Vorbildliche Bauten in Niederösterreich 2023 for Raiffeisen corner St. Pölten

We are very happy about the award “Vorbildliche Bauten in Niederösterreich 2023“!

Our joint project Raiffeisen corner St. Pölten with Studio Hoffelner Schmid was selected from over 50 submissions together with 5 other award winners.

Start of construction for Koblach Kutzen

On 28 June, the groundbreaking ceremony for Koblach Kutzen collective housing took place and marked the start of the construction work.

On the outskirts of Koblach, not far from the Swiss border, five residential buildings are being built together with Wilhelm+Mayer Bau Gmbhand Vorarlberger Wohnbauselbsthilfe.

The “Kutzner Plätzle” forms the start of the collective housing estate. In addition to the appartments, the centre of the neighbourhood will be vitalised with a childcare centre run by the municipality and a community room. The concept aims to bring the generations closer together.

EXHIBITION | Social. Spaces. Matter. – feld72 feld72 , Vienna

The building “Haus am Park” in Vienna, Austria, emphasises its prominent location at the park with a high point at the corner. The staggering appearance gives the building significance and at the same time optimises the incidence of light. In typology, the building incorporates the characteristics of old town houses, which in the long term allows for a variety of uses: the public ground floor with the dance studio and the office floor above it form a lively base. The residential floors above are connected by a projecting and recessed transparent joint. This combines naturally lit access space with common rooms arranged one above the other. A modular construction structure allows architectural freedom and changeability in the life cycle of the building.

The Last Grand Tour is a graphic and textual atlas edited by Park Books curated by Michael Obrist (feld72) and Antonietta Putzu with the research group 253.2 Wohnbau und Entwerfen that explores the Italian territory. It is a great road movie that investigates cities, territories, and regions through associative and nonlinear reflection.

We are proud to have participated as contributors to the book with our reflection on Rome.

Is it possible to establish a maximum of attention and concrete new possibilities of use and play for an existing location of the festival centre for the steirische Herbst in Graz, Austria — the Forum Stadtpark — in a resourcesaving way? Yes, with a re-usable deposit and return object, infinitely available, with enormous potential: the Euro pallet. Diverted from its normal purpose it becomes the component for temporary architecture just as well as the brick for a durable house. The architecture with expiry date crosses and breaks the existing building, spatially, typologically and aesthetically. A productive disturbance. Especially in its ephemerality it strives for great presence.

EXHIBITION | Social. Spaces. Matter. – feld72, (feld72), Vienna

Eight houses in wood hybrid construction form an ensemble around the green inner courtyard of the residential complex “Maierhof” in Bludenz, Austria. With the existing listed building the different dimensions and orientations of the buildings allow a variety of views of the surrounding mountainscape and strengthen the character of a grown village. An underground car park keeps the majority of the settlement car-free. The central inner courtyard with its playground as well as the new neighbourhood square are available to the entire neighbourhood as well as the residents. In addition to the varied open spaces a common room promotes living together within the settlement and beyond.

EXHIBITION | Social. Spaces. Matter. – feld72, feld72 , Vienna

On the site of the former Leopoldau gas works, the residential quarter “Neu Leopoldau” in Vienna is being built along the theme of “Young Living”. At the entrance to the area, the monolithic building with its facade of prefabricated elements of fair-faced concrete sets an urbanistic accent. The design was based on the idea of creating an open and lively building. The so-called “plus spaces” – the zone between the glazed entrance doors and the apartments – play a special role. These transitional areas, with their openness to the staircase, promote communication within the building, which the residents themselves define – from a studio to a hairdressing salon to a home office. A common room as well as the summer kitchen, which is available to the entire quarter, create further meeting places for residents in the house.

The work of feld72 pivots on the interface between architecture, applied urbanisms and art. The team has implemented numerous projects of various dimensions internationally, ranging from urban-development studies and master plans to buildings, space and exhibition designs to urban strategies as well as large-scale interventions in public space.

The multiple award-winning works (et al. several times the Austrian “Staatspreis Architektur” as well as the “Gold Medal of Italian Architecture”) are distinguished by a socially responsible, innovative, and sustainable approach to topics in architecture and urbanism. Sensing the potentials of locations and (social) spaces and strengthening them is a fundamental element of feld72’s projects.

A large tent forms the central element of the exhibition. As a temporary structure, the ‘space in a space’ is representative of feld72’s experimental projects – the ones that go beyond the rules of conventional architecture. Urban strategies and large-scale interventions in public space are ultimately what the Vienna-based architecture collective made a name for itself within the first years after its founding in 2002.

Das Architekturkollektiv feld72 setzt sich in seiner Arbeit universell mit (sozialem) Raum auseinander. Neben Gebäudeentwürfen und ihren Umsetzungen sind es sowohl theoretische als auch experimentelle Projekte von feld72, die übergreifende Fragen zu gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen aufgreifen. Dabei liegt der Fokus auf der Gestaltung von Orten des Zusammenlebens in Stadt und Land, auf Bildungsbauten und öffentlichen Räumen. Die Ausstellung gibt Einblicke in die vielschichtige Praxis des Kollektivs. Eine Auswahl realisierter Projekte verdeutlicht, dass für feld72 die soziale Interaktion in gebauten Strukturen und das Erkennen und Aktivieren von räumlichen Potenzialen zentrale Anliegen sind. Nicht zuletzt geht es auch um Materialität, also um die konkrete Umsetzung von Konzepten und Strategien in Architektur.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION | Social. Spaces. Matter. – feld72, Vienna

The Vienna-based architecture collective feld72 universally examines (social) space in its work. Besides building designs and their realisations, there are also theoretical and experimental projects by feld72 that take up overarching topics with respect to social challenges. The focus is thus on designing locations for coexistence in the city and the countryside, on educational buildings and public spaces. The exhibition titled "Social. Spaces. Matter." provides insights into the collective’s multi-layered practice. A selection of realised projects illustrates that feld72 is particularly concerned with social interaction in built structures and with recognising and activating spatial potentials. Last but not least, it is also about materiality, thus about the concrete implementation of concepts and strategies in architecture.
