For recruiters to find success in their job, Jodi Walton believes in having a natural curiosity when interviewing candidates.
“I've always been more comfortable asking a lot of questions than answering questions,” says Jodi.
“It's good to have some set questions [that you can] follow. But you need to be open to the nuances, the time, people's facial expressions and things like that. If you see something, dig around a little bit more.”
“You can go off on lots of different tangents. But if you're not interested, if you're not curious, you don't find out what you need to find out.”

Organisations that find success are often the ones that put relationships at the forefront of their culture. Building genuine, authentic relationships, however, takes time. Michelle Strong believes that leaders must show vulnerability and consistency in developing a trusting environment for people.
“I don't walk into a business as a new employee, and by the end of the first week, everyone talks about everything that I say and everything that I do. It takes time. It takes consistency in doing what I say I'm going to do and consistency in the behaviour that I show towards people throughout the business to develop that mutually trusting relationship.”

Leaders with military backgrounds are initially expected to enforce an authoritarian approach to leadership. Christian Mingay dares to debunk this misconception in this episode of The People Shift Podcast.
Contrary to most people's perception of him, Chris is an adaptive leader. He explains that the major catalyst to his leadership approach was having had more than 40 leaders to look up to throughout his career.
"Some were good, some were okay. You just get to know which ones worked and which ones didn't, which ones you liked, which ones you didn't, which ones you respected and looked up to and wanted to emulate. I think that's pretty important to be a good leader. You've got to start at the bottom and have lots of leads. "

How can a process-driven engineer lead a team without prior training? It’s a scenario common in many organisations. We promote the best person into a management position and fail in one thing—we don’t equip them enough to master the yin and yang of business: the people and the processes.
Whilst working as an engineer at Holden, Jeremy witnessed the company undergo a massive cultural change—the entire workforce was being transitioned due to a significant downsizing. A few years later, he found himself in a different role, at a different company with a completely different culture. Without any solid mentor, he was left to navigate the complexities of leadership on his own.
In the sixth episode of The People Shift Podcast, Cybill Juarez and Jamie Getgood sit down with Jeremy Allen-Waters as he shares his first leadership experience, how continuous improvement plays a big role in empowering his team at Vinidex and how his Holden experience shaped him into the people-focused leader he is today.
