Through her volleyball journey, Hazel has enjoyed numerous positive experiences, forming meaningful connections and treasured relationships along the way. Proudly an out and proud transgender member of the sporting community, Hazel is an outspoken advocate for diversity and inclusion in sports, believing strongly in the importance of representation. Grateful for the safe and joyful sporting environment she experiences, Hazel attributes much of this to the trailblazing efforts of q***r role models who preceded her. National Reconciliation Weekโs theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, reminds us all that the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must continue and to explore ways in which we can contribute to reconciliation.
At Adelaide University Sport and Fitness we are committed to participation and inclusion across the entire University community. We are dedicated to ensuring that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander athletes are represented and included in our community. In line with this commitment, each year we support a team of students and staff to attend the 2024 UniSport Indigenous Nationals. Details of the athletes and staff traveling to Wollongong in June can be found in our photos. Congratulations and best of luck to the team as they represent The University of Adelaide, competing with universities from all over Australia.
At our Women in Sport event this year, we collected donations for the Happy Boxes Project. Thanks to our amazing volunteers, including Alice Sabine, the recipient of the Adelaide University Sport and Fitness, Peopleโs Choice Credit Union Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Athlete Scholarship, we have almost 50 Happy Boxes filled with essential hygiene products for community. They will be sent to remote Indigenous communities to empower women, promote self care and to help close the gap through provision of essential items.
