Cabra Dominican College
Blending old with new, the beautiful Cabra campus is just 10 minutes south of Adelaide CBD.
Cabra Dominican College offers an outstanding Catholic co-educational experience for students in Years 7 to 12.
Our budding chefs in Year 10 Food Technology started the semester with a chocolate-filled bang competing in a sweet cookie competition. The rest of the school was tormented by the smell of freshly baked cookies as four lucky staff members had the difficult job of deciding who would come out on top. While it was a close call only one group could be crowned winner, That's the way the cookie crumbles.
We welcome Cabra fathers, grandfathers, and father figures to the Father's Day Community Morning.
Please RSVP by Tuesday 27 August via https://forms.office.com/r/uTLwTsUWHp

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in July each year. This week celebrates and recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth .
Our RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) team, who work to drive positive change regarding the rights of Indigenous Australians, are excited to announce that over the past months, they have been working on a major project. This project, which will be launched early next term, is an important step in our journey towards reconciliation. Watch this space!
Over half of the Year 12 students and several staff members swapped their warm beds for cardboard boxes last Friday. Whilst the Winter Sleepout was an opportunity to connect and bond over a warm cup of soup, the experience was eye-opening and confronting. The students gained a deeper awareness of the harsh realities encountered by those facing homelessness and are inspired to continue to support Vinnies and make a greater difference in the community.

In Week 9, the Year 9 Rite Journey Mentor Teachers were delighted to host a Mentor Breakfast.
The familiar saying, "it takes a village to raise a child," indicates the significance of surrounding children and adolescents with well-meaning adults. As educators dedicated to nurturing responsible, respectful, and resilient young adults, we recognise the vital role that adult mentors play in the lives of young people. Interacting with respectful and responsible adults provides crucial learning experiences that help students understand what it means to be a โgoodโ person.
The Mentor Breakfast offered a wonderful opportunity for Year 9 students to spend quality time with their mentors, further fostering these important relationships. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the mentors who took time out of their mornings to support and guide our students.
Year 10s visited the RAH to participate in the P.A.R.T.Y Program - Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth. Students met with various hospital staff including doctors, nurses and paramedics as well as a trauma survivor.
Through interactive, role-play scenarios, students came face-to-face with the possible consequences of making a risky decision that can lead to devastating and traumatic consequences.

This morning, the Moore House Captains had the privilege of sharing morning tea with Kaurna Elder John Lochowiak. They gained valuable insights into his work with Aboriginal Catholic Ministries and their support for First Nations people in South Australia. John also honoured us with a smoking ceremony.
Inspired by this experience, the Moore Captains are energised to plan the next chapter of the Moore House Social Justice Initiative.

Itโs a very busy time of term, as students in the Middle Years engage in a variety of learning activities! Much of the learning in the Middle Years in the last few weeks can be summarised through the use of three words- ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ, ๐ฐ๐ผ๐น๐น๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ and ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐ณ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐!
๐ข๐๐ฟ ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐ณ๐ are in the midst of Project Based Learning (PBL) in HASS - History. They have explored history in a variety of ways, to foster curiosity, and are now embarking on their driving question- โAs historians, design and create an engaging and educational showcase that focuses on a particular artefact, person, place or event from the ancient world.โ We canโt wait to show you their creative showcases at the end of the term!
๐ข๐๐ฟ ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐ด students have been working collaboratively to research, learn and teach a First Nations game or pastime to their peers in Health and Physical Education. It has been wonderful to watch students engage so enthusiastically in a variety of games taught by their peers. This activity provides the opportunity to learn about, appreciate and experience aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
๐๐ป ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐ต, our students have been, and continue to be, guided through a range of challenges and conversations that develop resilience and confidence in our Rite Journey Program. Some of these activities include learning to juggle three balls, cooking for the family, and working with others to throw and catch staves in a particular pattern, just to name a few! We continue to offer these activities to build persistence, with the ultimate challenge coming in Term 3 - The Abyss Camp.
The final VET Information Sessions for the Term are this Friday. We hope to see many Year 10 and Year 11 students there!
Congratulations to the Year 10 and 11 Drama class for their engaging, hilarious production of โThe Grumpiest Boy in the Worldโ by Finegan Kruckemeyer. As a vibrant piece of childrenโs theatre written in the style of magic realism, Zachary, a believable 7-year-old boy, encounters a range of unreal characters, such as the Giant, Hirsute and a talking Lion, brought to life from his imagination and drawings of his toys in his room. Through his creative and imaginative role-play Zachary, like young children everywhere, is free to explore who he is.
The class worked well as actors and off-stage designers to solve creative problems with theatrical solutions and ideas bringing this heart warming piece together to reinforce the themes of using your imagination to find your true self and that everyone is unique in their own way.
The Year 12s have been busy fundraising for the Vinnies Winter Appeal to support their upcoming winter sleepout initiative. You may have seen them on Saturday morning cooking up a storm for the early bird sports enthusiasts.
There is still time to donate and show your support for their hard work: https://vinnies-sa.grassrootz.com/cabra-domincan-college-sleepout-for-vinnies-2024

Today, some of our student leaders attended the annual Australian of the Year Awards Luncheon. The students were able to listen to Professor Georgina Long and Professor Richard Scolyer who were joint Australian of the Year winners, for their award-winning research into melanoma.
Other guests included Tim Jarvis who is doing research into climate change in Antarctica, Sr Meredith Evans, a Mercy Sister who is doing extensive work with refugees in South Australia, Rachel Zaltron who founded Backpacks for Kids and Tiahni Adamson who is a sustainability expert.
Thank you to Jan Chorley, who is the CEO of Australian of the Year Council SA and one of Cabraโs Board Directors, for allowing our students this inspiring opportunity.

As part of the Mentor program, Year 12 students are encouraged to make a positive contribution to the community, develop a sense of social justice and work in partnership with organisations. This term, all Year 12s have worked in groups to choose a recipe, bring ingredients and prepare soups to donate to Puddle Jumpers Incorporated.
Round 2 of the VET Information Sessions are happening this Friday during Mentor Class. We invite all Year 10s and 11s to these sessions so they can learn about the many opportunities available to them to complete a VET course in 2025 and gain SACE credits!
