Congratulations to and for becoming the first Australian stonemasons to be awarded the FCTA & Cathedral Workshop Fellowship International Training Scholarship in Stonemasonry. Joel will be based at and Bianca will be at for 2 months. Both recently completed their Certificate III in Stonemasonry and are continuing with the Certificate III in Heritage Trade Skills. This scholarship was made possible by the programme that allowed me to travel to the UK and Europe to investigate heritage trade training, the Building Capabilities programme supported by the Department for Innovation and Skills that supported the creation of the Cert III in Heritage Trade Skills course, and RenewalSA. Both Joel and Bianca will be returning to SA to pass on their experience to other stonemasonry apprentices. If you would like to sponsor this initiative, please contact us anytime. .boyermp

On my way to Paisley Abbey, I spotted creepy bronze babies hanging from this art deco building. The Russell Institute was completed in 1927 and was a child welfare clinic. Today it is a skills centre!

Cologne Cathedral has many intricate details that can be easily missed. This section of the cathedral isnt open to tourists but shows the level of detail that goes into every aspect of the conservation of the cathedral
Had the incredible experience of meeting with one of the stonemasons working on St Vitus Cathedral. Honza has been working at the cathedral for 16 years. Construction on the cathedral started in 1344 and was only completed in 1929. This is the southern tower, that houses the bell tower.

My first stop as part of my was to the stonemasonry school on the island of Brac, Croatia. Many thanks to the school for being so generous with their time! The students projects surround the school and showcase their skill and quality training. Looking forward to future collaboration! We may need to relocate our trade school to the coast so we can lure some of the trainers to South Australia! (Yes that is a yacht parked out front of the school) .boyermp
I’m currently in Iceland and have been checking out the built history. Even though Iceland is made up of 90% basalt, there are few stone buildings. When Vikings settled the land, they felled most the islands trees. As a result, a lot of their oldest buildings were turf construction, built into the ground, with driftwood incorporated. Many decomposed over the centuries, leaving few original examples. From the 18th century, new building techniques increased. Brick was tried and found to be unsuitable. With increased trade more wooden & stone structures were built.
My favourite building, and probably the best known, is the Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavik. Building commenced in 1941 and took 40 years to complete. The building is made of concrete. Its sparse interior design is clean and minimalistic, devoid of architectural embellishments. The façade design was inspired by the basalt hexagonal columns found along the coastline.
Lorraine Baff 18/08/1952 - 25/02/2023
It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother and FCTA co-founder, Lorraine Baff. Mum advocated for scores of people through her work supporting injured workers and her involvement in the Aged Care Royal Commission. She was driven by a strong desire for justice, especially for those who would not normally have their voices heard. Lorraine was an acting board member for the CITB and was involved with the Rotary Club of Salisbury for many years.
She was a constant presence in her family's life, always making family her first priority. Her affection for many of our apprentices and former students was clear. During her last days, we spoke of some of the students she remembered fondly, especially those regional who she welcomed into her home so they could attend trade school.
We will be holding a memorial for Lorraine at the Oakden Hotel on Wednesday, 8th March, from 4pm. As per Lorraine's wishes, she wanted to have her family and friends celebrate and laugh. All are welcome to attend.

If you need to have a new driver's license issued because of the Optus security breach, you can now apply online. However, you must have a vehicle registered in your name - if not you still need to attend a Services SA branch.
Replace driver's licence following Optus data breach If your driver's licence details were compromised through the Optus data breach, you can replace your licence and have a new licence number issued.
Big thank you to John and for their ongoing support of our apprentice tilers!
