π΄ Practise at Home - Floating
Fear of the water, lack of familiarity, sensory sensitivity and lack of control are a few reasons why some children struggle to float happily in the water during swimming lessons. You can help them become more confident and find the skill fun and relaxing at home in the bath.
π¦ Floating can be practised at a very young age. In fact it can be one skill that can be introduced right from babies first bath.
π¦ Start with a small amount of water in the bath tub and lay your child on his/her back. Ensure where possible the head is flat and ears are slightly below the water.
π¦ As the child becomes more confident you can fill the bath up more so the level allows them to comfortably sit waist deep in the water.
π¦ Support their head and back in the water for confidence and to keep their face above the water. Always maintain eye contact to create trust.
π¦ Create a calm and soothing environment to help them relax. Play some relaxing music or dim the lights. Speak quietly and positively and encourage deep breaths to relax.
π¦ Once the child becomes more confidence, you can begin to move your hands away from their head and back.
π¦ Once their confidence grows start to make it a little more fun by balancing a small toy on their forehead or stomach
Remember to always go at the pace of the child. If at any stage they show signs of stress, stop and then try again at a later stage. Regular floating sessions in the bath will help comfort and reinforce confidence of the skill, so that when they return to the pool for swimming lessons their achievement of floating will come with fun and a smile.

Learning and Nurturing for life.
At Norwood Swim School we believe teaching is more than just the mechanics of swimming. We're dedicated to nurturing courage, building confidence, and celebrating the thrill of conquering fears in every lesson.
π§β𦱠What do i need to bring to my child's swimming lesson?
Getting ready for your child's swimming lesson? Here is a checklist of essentials to make sure your have success!
1. Swimwear - Make sure you have some appropriate swimwear for your child to wear. We suggest chlorine resistant and where possible no rash tops as this restricts movement of strokes.
2. Towel - Don't forget a towel to dry off after lessons. A hair towel is also recommended for long hair when it is cold and wet outside.
3. Goggles - Make sure your child has a good fit goggle to wear for comfort. Take a look in our swim shop and ask our customer service officers for advice if required.
4. A snack and water bottle - Children often get hungry after swimming so make sure a snack is on hand to keep them energised. A drink bottle is also advised to stay hydrated, especially in summer when it is hot. If you leave it on the side of the pool they can sip on it during rest times if required.
5. Warm clothes - This is important in the cooler months for children to change before leaving so they don't get cold.
With these essentials your child will be ready to dive into their swimming lesson with confidence! π¦
