AWOC DuO Champs @ Nail Can Hill
A reminder we have our DuO Champs this Sunday at Nail Can Hill.
Note: Both men's and women's championship courses now have one run leg instead of two.
The DuO combines foot and MTB orienteering, although you can opt to do only one or the other (but must do both to be eligible to win a championship).
Best if you RSVP to ensure a map is available (see below).
Event Details
As with all our events, everyone is welcome and plenty of help is available - don't be scared off by "Club Champs" as it's much the same as any other event. Courses are available for a wide range of abilities.
'DuO' is a mix of foot and mountain bike orienteering, this year featuring one leg of each. But you don't have to do both - everyone is welcome to opt for just one or the other (you won't be classified as part of the DuO Championship but it's a great area for orienteering and worth coming along).
Navigation is relatively easy for both the foot and MTB legs (similar to 'Moderate' standard foot courses).
Nail Can Hill is relatively steep and much of the riding is taxing, with some steep climbs and some rough sections of track. Be sure to factor this in to your course selection.
Date Sunday, 11th August
Time start anytime between 10 am and 11 am, courses close 2 pm
Location
Nail Can Hill, Albury (Range Rd entrance)

Directions : Google - Apple
Event Type
DuO (foot and MTB - do both or just one)

Course 2 - Women's Championship

9mile reserve event #1 28th April 2024
The battle for the 2024 ‘North East South West Interstate Challenge Cup’ (gotta love that name!) began at 9 Mile Reserve, Ettamogah. A small turnout of WaggaRoos and a large contingent of AWOCers meant AWOC collected a huge points haul in our annual Interclub competition.
Recently moved to Albury, Kayla Fairbairn made a statement by winning Long Hard by a big margin – almost 13 minutes faster than second-placed Jack Janetzki from WaggaRoos. Behind Kayla, the other runners were very close on times, with only 16 minutes separating 2nd from 10th. James Lithgow, visiting from Orange, NSW, had a good run to finish third with Tony Perrott gaining an Interclub podium points position finishing forth (3rd of ‘the locals’ for whom points are awarded).
Rob Simmons won Short Hard by 2 minutes from Liz Wood, with ‘the walkers’ completing the placings.
Father and son Emmo and Gibb Willinck had a close tussle on Moderate, with dad Emmo about 2 minutes faster. Mum Lou Bull wasn’t far behind in third, the family having a strong outing.
The kids (and a few not so young) had a great time on Easy, with Eve Joyce demonstrating rapid improvement to win the course in a good time. Eve’s siblings and cousins Clara, Tilly, Theo and Pearl ran together to finish in an identical time for second place with Indiana Flower. Well done boys and girls! Special mention to brothers Lackie and Roy Graeber, completing their first
Thanks to course setter Matt Flower for organising a day enjoyed by all!

POEM OF THE WEEK
No video this week but we do have a poem, kindly shared by Leigh Privett.
O’s the Go
They start arriving Friday night
Pitching tents while still some light
Singles, families young and old
Everyone is good as gold
Others stay in towns nearby
Or in a car high and dry
The group’s a mixed and varied one
They have fun in the sun
Hiking into starting line
Dales and hills up we climb
’Till we reach the place to go
Loos and lanes – what a show
We’re in the bush now way out there
Ferret and Leigh a funny pair
But when they line up to race
Winning’s the thing – it’s hot the pace
Maps upturned away they go
Next mob ready crouching low
Eager and ready to break the line
To get back home in the fastest time
Now clock is moving tick, tick, tick
Through the bush quick, quick, quick
Orienteering’s a real thrill
Moving, plotting, dodging skill
O’ers tend to be happy and fit
When they’re racing no time to sit
But when they cross the line at end
On a drink and a yarn you can depend
They gather near the finish board
Where names and times they record
And cheer the little kids on home
As they finish on their own
Lunchtime Sunday the meet it ends
You’ve met new people made new friends
The bush returned to it’s natural best
You’d never know it had some guests
Yes O’s the go for one and all
Get out there and have a ball
It keeps you fit and full of vim
Skirting ‘round the forest rim.
Jeff Geard 1/98
Now where did this come from? A very close friend who often travelled with me just passed away and among other poems, this was found among his belongings. Jeff never orienteered but was a close friend of some of us and saw our activities at the assembly area. Who were those mentioned briefly. One was the undersigned and the other (by nickname) an unnamed (here) a fierce competitor. Do you think it’s a good reflection of our sport? Leigh Privett (AWOC)
