I help diagnose melanoma. Thankfully most of the melanoma's I find are at their very early stage and most people don't even know the melanoma is there! MIA's incredible research helps so many people fight this non-discriminatory but very preventable disease.

FYI post... because Melanoma can be found anywhere there is skin! Not only on the sun exposed areas of the body.

When you have a full body skin cancer check at Ballarat Skin Checks and Skin Cancer Ballarat, we ask you to remove your outer clothing. This can be a daunting prospect but to do our job properly we need to look at as much skin as possible. The un******ng is usually done in halves. Top half first, for those wearing bra's, you get to keep them on. Then we switch around to look at the bottom half (legs) underwear stays on although, we have a quick look at the buttocks. We search around using our dermatascope from top to toe, back to front and sides. Private areas are at self disclosure. This means if you know you have a mole down below that you want us to check, you'll need to tell us and give us permission to check it out.

If you haven't had a skin check before, please don't put it off because you may feel uncomfortable, we do our best to ease your discomfort. Half an hour is all it takes for peace of mind.

‘Pulverised’: What exactly does the sun do to your skin? We know we should be sun smart, but what does that mean these days? What actually happens when the sun hits your skin? And is sun damage reversible?

In 2021, Ballarat Skin Checks had 18 melanoma's removed by the Skin Cancer Ballarat team. Numerous BCC's and SCC's were detected and also removed. That's only in 7 active months!
Lots of sun damaged faces and hands were managed with the latest field treatments. A few high risk melanoma patients had their Total Body Photography done. We thank our nurse Carol Bond for keeping these treatments and procedures going while I was away for 5 months, wishing her all the best in her new role.

NODULAR MELANOMA (the most common fatal melanoma)

Nodular melanoma was the diagnosis in only 12% of the cases, yet accounted for over 70% the melanoma deaths.

Growing
They grow more quickly and become invasive more rapidly than other types of melanoma. Up to 5 times as fast. They are NOT always PIGMENTED (example below). Useful advice is to have any firm growing lump checked if it doesn't resolve in 4 weeks.

These guys are one of the very few animals that can and should sun bake! Aren't they beautiful in an ugly and scary kinda way? Skin cancers can be the same, to look at under the microscope they can be quite pretty but we know they are scary and should be removed.
