Have you ever noticed that some media outlets can seem biased towards a particular political party or organisation? Well, this is very much ‘a thing’ and has been going on for a long time.

To help us get a better viewpoint of how media can be biased, and how we can then rely on the information communicated by various media outlets, we can utilise the Interactive Media Bias Chart produced by Ad Fontes Media. Note that the free version will only provide default information (USA-based).

After filtering Podcasts, "The Journal" appears to be the most impartial and dependable source, while "CBS Evening News" and "BNO News" are the top choices for TV and articles/websites, respectively. It's worth noting that the articles and websites category contains many news sources that are popular on social media, revealing how unreliable the information can be from these sources.

How do you go about fact checking information you see on social media? Here are some of our top tips.

• Who: Examine the source of the information. Is it a reliable, reputable source like a government website, academic institution, or well-known media outlet? Verify that the source is legitimate and not a fake account or website impersonating the real source.

• What: Carefully review the content itself. Does it seem accurate and factual? Compare the information to other credible sources to cross-verify the claims. Look for evidence, citations, and objective language rather than opinion or speculation.

• When: Check that the information is current and up-to-date. Older information may no longer be accurate, so look for publication or review dates. Ensure any referenced sources are also recent.

• Where: Consider the geographical location and context of the source. Is the information relevant and applicable to your needs? Look for other sources in your local area or region to provide additional context.

• Why: Understand the authority and motivation behind the information. What are the author's credentials and affiliations? Is the purpose to inform objectively or to persuade with a particular agenda? Scrutinise the use of statistics and data to ensure they are from reliable, transparent sources.

Misinformation v Disinformation. Do you know the difference?

Misinformation: Incorrect or misleading information, that is not intentionally deceptive. For example, you see a post on social media warning about a scam doing the rounds related to passwords, so you share it to warn others. The post is inaccurate, but you didn’t realise this when you shared the information. You are spreading ‘misinformation’ as you weren’t intentionally being deceptive.

Disinformation is false information deliberately created and spread to mislead or deceive people. For example, a political party may create false information and spread it to harm the reputation of another party in the hope of impacting the results of an election.

Can you think of any examples of misinformation versus disinformation you can share with us? Post in the comments.

Why do I need to do the DLL? Can’t I just Google the same content?

You could conduct a Google search or ask ChatGPT or another AI tool about the same concepts covered within the DLL, and there are fantastic videos on YouTube. However, you have to know what to search or ask about, and you would also need to consider the pre-requisite knowledge you need before moving on to another concept. And you then need to be able to verify the accuracy and credibility of the responses you are provided with, because we know we can't believe everything we read online!

You can very quickly end up down a rabbit hole spending lots of unnecessary time looking for the same information that we present in a logical, structured manner in a way that breaks down concepts that you can then further explore online if you wish to. Our goal is to give you the underlying digital literacy to be able to go and find out more on your own and know the questions to be asking.

Did you know that Google continues to track your activity when you're using "Incognito" mode on Chrome? The purpose for which is to onsell the tracked data to advertisers.

In a major settlement, Google has agreed to delete data it collected on users while they were browsing in "Incognito" private mode on Chrome and other browsers. The class action lawsuit alleged that Google continued to track and collect user data for advertising purposes, even when people believed they were browsing privately.

This case highlights the ongoing privacy concerns around how our data is collected and used, even when we think we're browsing privately.
