Kirrily Thorby is a proud Aboriginal Koori woman who is a fulltime Busy Mum, part time working with 3 children living all the way In Tropical North Queensland.
Growing up in a small isolated rural town in NSW I knew I wanted more in life. Having a tough childhood, I was determined to make a difference in my life and also make a pathway for my siblings and showing them, it doesn’t matter where you come from or who you are. You can achieve anything you put your mind to and make a positive change for the better.
I have always been in the educational environment. Graduating from high school to a full-time role at the University of UNSW within the Indigenous sector was an amazing achievement. I believe education is essential and necessary for the future.
I decided to study a Certificate 4 in Youth work to gain more knowledge and expand my skills to fulfill my passion and get out of my comfort zones.
“I want to be a positive role model not only for my children, but also for my family, my community, and my people. Showing them little things have a big impact and encouraging, supporting, and guiding them to have a good balance, connection and structure in their lives can make a huge difference.”
I have now secured a New Job with IFYS and can’t wait to make a difference to somebody’s life whether it be big or small. I thank Nexus Training Hub for providing me with the new knowledge to advance forward and excel on my new pathway.

I was born and raised in Brisbane, Australia to a Samoan father, and an English/Singaporean mother.
Having worked as a pick packer since I was out of school, I had come to a crossroads in my career. Did I want to stay comfortable and stick to what I know? Or did I want to try something different. My friend suggested Youth Work, and from there, I decided to study my Cert IV in Youth Work.
I completed my Cert IV in approximately 2 months, and was able to secure a job as a Residential Care Worker with Mercy Community Services shortly after, getting a permanent part-time role from the get go.
While I work in Residential Care Worker, I am also studying a Bachelors in Sports Management at Bond University.

I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer but once I started treatment I knew I wanted to pursue my career in youth work. So between chemotherapy treatments when I felt up for it I would get my study done.
I have always wanted to work with youth and help make a difference ever since supporting my cousin go through a traumatic time in her life. It pushed me to want to help more young people where I can.
The certificate opened up doors I never knew I could reach. From the moment I finished the course I had an interview lined up and started work straight away.
I’ll be working towards my goal of Case Manager as have years of management experience so I have always felt that is my pathway as well as being as hands on with the youth as I can be.

Six years of call centre work became very tedious and mentally taxing. That’s when I decided to make the career change.
Instead of helping people over the phone, I wanted to take on a more face to face approach.
Nexus gave me the opportunity, resources and guidance I needed to get my foot into the door and successfully complete my Cert IV in youth work.
The course seemed quite daunting at first, but with the help of the trainer, it became simple to understand and they were happy to answer any questions I had to ensure I was successful.
I now work as a youth worker for young males at risk, assisting them in everyday tasks and helping them prepare for adulthood.

Every day is different and it’s so rewarding building a relationship with our youth and seeing them grow, improve and change for the better.

My name is Jenny Kelsall, I come from a Samoan background and am the eldest of 3. I recently made the move over to Australia and have been living here for just under a year now. When I first arrived here I wasn’t sure what kind of work I wanted to pursue because of the new environment.
I decided a Certificate III Community Services because I was offered a role as a support worker in disability. With Nexus I was able to study to get my certification and start work at the same time.
The certificate III Community Services has helped me a lot in my role because everything I had learnt about, I see while I am on shift. I am able to adapt to things and I am also able to understand/talk to my clients about what they are going through.
Right now I am content with the qualification I have however I am thinking of studying youth in the near future.

After working in the airline industry for several years and experiencing the many border closures and travel restrictions during the COVID pandemic, I decided it was finally time to switch career paths. I have always been interested in working with children and when I discovered Youth Work, I knew it was something I would enjoy!

I was able to secure a position as a Residential Youth Worker shortly after commencing my studies with Nexus. Almost a year later, I am still loving every aspect of being a Youth Worker and I am now completing a Bachelor of Secondary Education with the University of Southern Queensland.

The knowledge I have gained during my studies with Nexus has prepared me for my university studies and I have no doubt that my experiences as a Youth Worker will benefit me immensely as a high school teacher. Thank you, Nexus!
