Something that comes up often in teacher training is the stigma revolving around your capacity to do every single yoga pose and whether or not your capacity to do these shapes determines your ability to teach yoga and to be a good teacher.
🌸
But, if you happen to have a beautiful, strong, technically advanced practice, it doesn't necessarily mean you will automatically be a great teacher.
😅
I believe that you do need to have an advanced yoga practice, as in, you need to have been practising yoga for some years, you need to have an understanding of what’s happening anatomically in the shapes, an understanding of all of the other components of the practice philosophically, ethically, etc, but that you don’t necessarily need to be able to do say a handstand in the middle of the room or full splits to be able to be a good teacher.

Now to clarify, I do feel that if you want to teach handstands, then yes, absolutely it makes sense to be able to do them or at least be working on them yourself in your own practice… But to teach yoga as a whole, a handstand or whatever shape you’re worried about is not a prerequisite.

What makes you a good teacher is your ability to communicate clearly and efficiently. An understanding that every single person's body is different. A comprehension of how to adapt and provide options for this variety of bodies that showed up on that day. The capacity to read the room as you're teaching and identify the energy, capabilities and overall level of your class and whether what you have prepared is appropriate.

A few years ago, I had the absolute pleasure of attending a weekend workshop with the incredible Elena Brower who shared those words mentioned above and it's a sentence that has continued to stick with me over and over again
~
How often do we pretend to listen to someone while writing an email or working on our computers? How often do we divide our attention with someone while texting or scrolling on our phones? How often do we have the tv blaring while we eat, not really paying attention to what we're doing?
~
In a world where our attention is demanded and pulled at every opportunity - the moment when we actually give someone our true attention is incredibly potent, and it truly is the highest form of respect we can offer someone - including ourselves.
~
This is why I feel the practice of yoga is so important. Because every time we step on the yoga mat it's about giving ourselves the respect and attention we deserve. I couldn't tell you how many people confide in me that they feel guilty for taking time for themselves. In a world where 'busy-ness' is praised and burnout is almost an expectation, it's really time we changed the narrative to allow people the time and space to reconnect and restore.

I believe, the more we are able to connect back to ourselves, the more we are able to connect and give attention to those around us. I hope you're finding time in your week to give yourself the attention you so rightfully deserve 💜

The saying ‘practice and all is coming’ is something I used to hear a lot in my early days as a student, it went along with this belief that the more hours you put into your mat, the more you practised yoga the ‘better’ you would get, the more funky/cool poses you’d be able to do. Years later, with my own education and anatomical understanding and quite a bit more time spent both teaching and practising myself, I really have a new appreciation for how harmful that statement can be🌻

If there is one thing I wish my students would understand about yoga, it’s that sometimes, for some people, you may not ever ‘achieve/unlock/do’ a particular yoga pose. Maybe it’s something that just doesn’t align with your anatomy, or maybe it’s something that you used to be able to do but now after injury or something else of the like, it is no longer achievable for you.🚫

For some poses, in some people’s bodies, no matter how many hours of yoga they do, they may not ever be able to do a certain pose… and if that’s the case, can we all just be ok with that?🌸

The entire purpose of the practice is to just figure this stuff out. To work on what feels good in your body, to understand what doesn’t feel good and perhaps why. To learn safe boundaries, to learn the difference between needing to push and strengthen a little more and when to say this shape or pose isn’t for me. To understand that as you experience injuries, as the seasons change, as your other activities such as running, sports, cycling, rock climbing etc change or add on or drop off, as we age, as we get more stress or less stress day to day, that your practice will and should change🙌

This yoga biz is a constant opportunity to explore a deeper understanding of ourselves. The shapes… they’re just a small bit of the overall experience✨

We do yoga to feel into our bodies, not to force our bodies into certain shapes!
🌸
Although the image presented here is a fun, quirky little sundial/compass pose; it's important to understand that this shape isn't accessible for many people's bodies... and possibly for a variety of reasons

Not every yoga pose is achievable, nor is it necessarily 'good' for every person's body. Sometimes with social media and yoga websites, yoga books and all the rest, the entire message of yoga gets a little... misconstrued.

The purpose of your yoga practice.. is to practice! It's an opportunity to cultivate a deeper understanding of yourself, of your own capacity, and to learn your limits. It's there on your yoga mat where we work through frustrations both physically and mentally, we can certainly challenge ourselves and advance our practice but the experience isn't meant to be a punishment.

In a time when we are more disconnected from ourselves than ever before, it's important to recognise yoga is a tool for self-discovery. As written in the Bhagavad Gita - "Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.”

I've been so proud of how well the yoga world shifted and pivoted during the tumultuous times of covid to continue to provide offerings and support to our students and clients at I time when these unprecedented events saw stress levels skyrocket! We saw communities all over the place coming together to help and support one another - it was pretty cool to watch everyone come together!

But I was so bloody thankful when we were able to practise in person once more 🙌 There is something potent and powerful about a room of people all moving and breathing together as one. 🤸‍♀️Is yoga enough?

🍂This is something I asked myself often throughout the years of my practice and interestingly enough the answer is; well it depends. Annoying huh?!

✨I was convinced for a long time that yoga was all I needed in my life, however, after many years of practice and years of study and education I came to understand that I am quite hyper-mobile.

🌿If I only practice yoga and no other forms of exercise, I actually begin to experience aches, pains, niggles because I lack a certain amount of strength to support and stabilise my connective tissues and joints.

🌼Your yoga practice helps assist in improving flexibility, mobility and strengthening - but strengthening only up until a certain point. From then on it's my opinion that we need more.

💎I also know plenty of teachers and friends and students who only practise yoga and no other forms of exercise, but for me, it's not enough. I like the compliment yoga adds to any and all other forms of movement I choose to take on.

💥Whatever your primary form of movement is, I strongly recommend adding some yoga into your weekly routine! Join me online, in person, in group settings or for personalised private sessions.
