Dedicated to and fascinated by the causes and treatment of pain and dysfunction
For alot of chronic pain sufferers the mind plays a big role. A conflicting perception between a fear to move and a need to move, creates a sense of hopelessness, especially when traditional physical therapy doesn't help. Now, VR tech is helping to address the psychological side of pain by improving the confidence in movement and convincing the brain that movement is not as threatening as it once perceived. So cool!
I treat this kind of psychosomatic pain also through vagus nerve stimulation, which talks to that threat processing part of the brain, which also helps my clients return to a pain free movement. Glad to see more emphasis is being put on this important part of chronic pain.

You don't need less stress, you need more.
Let me explain.
I promise, this is not another ice bath bro post, but there is something that cold immersion and other practices like saunas and hard workouts have in common, that I feel is at the heart of a lot of the pain and dysfunction I see on a day to day basis in my clinic room.
Firstly though some basic neurology (bare with me). It is said that your health is basically a reflection how much stress your system can take before it disrupts your daily living. If you feel "stressed out" this is you reaching your limit. It is this 'limit' that we want to talk about here. The basic function of your nervous system is this...
INPUTS
This is all the sensory information coming at you from both your external and internal environment. This is the hot day, the food you just ate and the sense of where your body is in space.
PROCESSING
After sensory information enters the system it is processed. This is mostly done by the brain and is essentially your body and mind figuring out, what does this mean and what should be done about it.
OUTPUT
Once the mind produces a response, some kind of output is generated. This could be a sensation like really needing to p*e or feeling very hungry. A lot of the time however it is a myriad activity that YOU are never aware of.
It is this 'YOU' the experiencer of feelings and sensations that gets 'stressed out' and it is all because various INPUTS have been PROCESSED as too stressful and the OUTPUT is you feel stressed.
Whilst there are many ways to approach this there is one avenue that is entirely within your power to control and change. Improving your processing of stressful inputs can completely change the way you experience your life. I believe it is the sheer lack of these short term high stress experiences (and this is key) in a controlled environment followed by safety and calm, that leaves most far too sensitive to the world.
Activities that expose you to short term high stress followed by safety, moves the needle on whether an input becomes an output of "this is too much". The essence here is more bouts of controlled stress equals less chronic stress.
What is the difference between Remedial Massage and regular massage?
What a lot of people don't know is that a professional remedial massage therapist is trained to do a lot of what a physiotherapist does. We both assess whatever issues you are currently dealing with and come up with a plan to treat it. However, a remedial therapist will do a lot more hands-on tissue work, using various techniques like deep tissue work, needling and cupping to restore proper function of muscles, joints and nerves. Some physios will do this too but tend to focus more on exercises that will help resolve the issue. Both are important and remedial therapists will offer exercises if necessary.
A regular massage, one that you might find in a shopping centre or local Thai massage place, tends to be more general. Unless otherwise requested this usually looks like some sort of full body treatment using long sweeping strokes to move blood and lymphatic fluids around the body. This is why you may feel quite relaxed and groggy after.
Both are excellent options, it just depends on what you're trying to achieve. The benefit of seeing a professional remedial therapist (like me) is that they can likely do both anyway and you can consult with them as to what you want or need.

Discover the facts and benefits of myofascial cupping
1. Ancient Practice: Cupping is an ancient healing method that dates back thousands of years, with its origins in traditional Chinese, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern medicine.
2. Suction and Negative Pressure: Cupping involves creating a vacuum or negative pressure within cups placed on the skin, which draws blood to the surface and promotes healing.
3. Cupping Marks: Cupping often leaves distinctive circular marks or bruises on the skin, known as "cupping marks." These marks are typically temporary and result from the suction and increased blood flow to the treated areas.
4. Therapeutic Benefits: Cupping is used to relieve muscle tension, reduce pain, promote circulation, and assist in the treatment of various conditions, such as sore muscles, respiratory issues, and stress.

Stop stretching your hamstrings.
What this little trick demonstrates is that for most people it is the nervous system that is holding your fingers back from those toes, not a bunch of tight muscles.
This is very true for so many other issues in the body that we experience as tight, sore or stiff. The body and mind use these highly motivating sensations to prevent us from over stretching certain tissues and to protect vulnerable areas.
This is how I view the body when working with my clients, seeing their issue not as dysfunction but as the body doing it's best to adapt to the environment it is presented with.
