How is this for durability! I made this leather splint for a client almost 10 years ago. He has worn it daily since then and apart from replacing the velcro straps once during that time, it looks set to last him another 10 years

Here's an interesting fact you may not know about your hands. The anatomical s***f box is a hollow formed by the tendons of EPL and EPB. It is of clinical significance for a number of reasons but importantly, tenderness in the floor of the s***fbox can be an indication of a scaphoid fracture; the most commonly fractured carpal bone.

We often hear "I thought it wasn't broken because I could still move it" The ability to move a joint is not a reliable indicator of whether a bone is broken. This is because, the muscles and tendons which move that bone are usually still attached so you will almost always still be able to move the broken body part though it will naturally be painful. The only way to accurately determine if a bone is broken is to get an x-ray. This hand sign means different things in different cultures. To some people it means "Rock On", in other cultures it is considered a magic symbol to ward off the "evil eye" and in other cultures it is considered an offensive gesture! You can only make this sign because the index and little finger have independent extensor tendons allowing them to fully straighten while the middle and ring fingers are fully flexed. If you try to fully straighten the middle or ring finger while holding the other fingers fully flexed you will find you can't.

The scaphoid is a very important bone in the wrist. It receives its blood supply from just one end, meaning the blood needs to filter through the bone to get to the other end. This unusual blood supply can make healing difficult following some fractures of the scaphoid. If a schaphoid fracture fails to heal, it will have serious long-term consequences. A rare finding on x-ray. Tumours of the hand are extremely rare, but this was a sizeable bone tumour in one of our patients. The tumour was successfully excised and filled with a bone graft.

Treatment of a dislocated finger is not just a matter of popping the joint back into place. A finger dislocation results in significant injury to the soft tissues around the joint. Without proper follow-up, dislocations can result in long term joint stiffness and deformity. What is a Buckle Fracture? Buckle fractures at the wrist (radius and/or ulna) are a common childhood injury. Because children's bones are less brittle than adults' bones, the surface of the bone may 'buckle' instead of the bone breaking right through. Sometimes called Torus fractures, buckle fractures result from compression....

This is low temperature thermoplastic. Part of our job as hand therapists is creating custom-made thermoplastic splints. There are many advantages to a thermoplastic splint as it is light weight, washable, non-bulky and removable!

For those who want to get really technical, thermoplastic is a combination of polyurethane and polycaprolactone and a cross linking co-agent, with a melting point of 50-70°.🙂

There are a number of painful hand and wrist conditions which commonly affect new mums. The most common one being a tendon issue on the thumb side of the wrist, known as De Quervain's tenosynovitis, or Mummy's thumb. A great colello splint, made by our hand therapist Lincoln, during our staff training today. Fortunately this orthosis is not needed very often, but it is a highly effective treatment for anyone struggling to regain forearm rotation following a significant wrist injury.

At Bayside Hand Therapy we sometimes see people who have made their condition worse by squeezing a stress ball. If you have carpal tunnel syndrome or trigger finger, squeezing a ball is not recommended. The repetitive action the finger flexor tendons may cause inflammation and swelling, making trigger finger worse, and increasing pressure on the median nerve in the carpal tunnel.
