Hello from Herbs on the Hill. If you are a patient of Herbs on the Hill and you have a bigpond email address, you may not have received intended correspondence from your practitioner in recent months. We have identified the problem, and it has now been rectified, however if you think you may have missed communication from us please do contact your practitioner. We have amazing people in our profession, wonderful to see some of our greats awarded at the Naturopaths & Herbalists Association of Australia Naturopathic Symposium in Melbourne.
If you are a patient of ours at Herbs on the Hill we wanted to advise that due to a change in Qld Therapeutic Goods Act 2019 we will no longer be able to prescribe several products from the 27th September onwards:
GABA + L-Theanine
5-HTP
Ultra Theanine
Indolplex & FemBalance range
Zinc Picolinate
Please note, we have plenty of stock at the moment until they run out. Contact us should you require a script to be repeated. Some of these will still be available in compounding form (powder formulations) and we always have other options to work with.

Anxiety is a crippling condition that affects too many in our society.
Naturopathy is an ideal support for medical treatment and the herbs we have available may assist to support the nervous system and help rebuild resilience.
It’s worth noting that some herbs such as St John’s wort, may interact with pharmaceutical treatments and it’s very important to see a herbal practitioner to find the best solution for you.
A recent Australian study has confirmed that what we eat really does affect how we feel – and remarkably quickly. The study showed that symptoms of depression were significantly decreased in young adults (17-35 years) when they followed a healthier diet for three weeks. The adults included in the study were experiencing moderate to high levels of depression, and were consuming a diet high in sugar and processed foods. Our busy lifestyles have resulted in more and more of us eating fast and processed foods, but it seems convenience also comes at a price. Making simple changes to our diet, and reconnecting with the source of our food, can have a huge impact on our own health, as well as the health of those we love.
The flavanoids in chocolate are powerful antioxidants that perform a whole bunch of delicious improvements in our bodies:
Cognitive enhancement
Dopamine and serotonin levels increased
Oxytocin hit

Naturopathic Prescribing Naturopath and Nutritionist @ HerbsontheHill discusses professional prescription compared to self prescribing from a retail store
This is David Casteleijn, one of our founders.
With a Registered Nurse background, I have been in private practice as a Naturopath since 1992. Over this time I have developed a passion for Herbs and their wonderful healing and regenerative qualities, particularly in the last 10 years in relation to Anxiety and Depression.
This passion led me to teach herbal medicine at the Australian College of Natural Medicine ACNM (now called the Endeavour College of Natural Health ECNH). In 2006 I completed a Masters Health Science (Herbal Medicine) through the University of New England. I am Currently a PhD candidate at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) with my project being a naturalistic observational study of Western herbal medicine practice in self-reported anxiety and depression. In 2017 I was elected to the board of the Naturopaths and Herbalists Association of Australia (NHAA) and currently chair the professions committee
Herbal Medicine is ideal for treating many common health problems. These include chronic disorders such as arthritis, asthma, skin disorders and digestive problems which usually respond well. One of the greatest strengths of herbal medicine is the way it can improve the functioning of the immune system and nervous system – extremely important given the demands of our modern lives.
An article published just this month (Feb 22) in PLOS (Public Library of Science) found that changing our diet could add ten years to our life! Based on a meta-analysis and data from the Global Burden of Disease Study, an optimal diet had substantially higher intake than a typical diet of whole grains, legumes, fish, fruits, vegetables, and included a handful of nuts, while reducing red and processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, and refined grains. The changes in life span were estimated from people aged from 20 to 80, check it out!

Changing your diet could add ten years to your life – new research Diets high in legumes, whole grains, nuts and less red and processed meat were shown to be more beneficial for longevity.
In November 2020 the World Naturopathic Federation produced a researched-based white paper on the role of the Naturopathic Profession in a global pandemic. These rapid-reviews focused on human studies of natural products in treating acute respiratory tract infections. The results of these studies are an important consideration for COVID-19, and are not to be considered 'instead of' approaches, rather 'along with' in terms of modern medicine interventions we are grateful to have available to us. You can read the document below.
