There is so much more to behaviour than most people think. Children don’t try to upset us, there is usually something behind it. They are communicating their need through behaviour. If we look behind the behaviour we can see a child who is doing the best they can
As Speech Pathologists we often see children showing a sensory triggered response so we recommend they see an Occupational Therapist to have an assessment to see the extent and severity as well as to seek ways to help the child and parents adjust and respond in the best way. We see what a difference this makes!
They're kiddos and this may trigger them.

20-26th August is SPEECH PATHOLOGY WEEK 🎉
This year’s theme is ‘Communicating for Life’
👶🏻👧🏽👩🏻🦰🧔🏼♂️🧓🏼
At any age or stage of life people can experience communication difficulty or barriers to communication.
Did you know that 1 in 7 Australians will experience communication difficulty in their lifetime?
Any communication difficulty, mild or complex, may be a barrier for a person to interact with others and participate in everyday activities.
With the right supports, every person with communication difficulty can overcome these barriers and live a good life.
Who can help?
Certified Practising Speech Pathologists (CPSP) are university educated and trained to assist people with communication and/or swallowing difficulties. They support people to function at home as well as in the classrrom, workplace and in other settings.
For more information about Speech Pathologists and Speech Pathology Week, head to speechpathologyaustralia.com.au
🌟At Speech Language & Learning, all of our Speech Pathologists are CPSP members. We love supporting people to achieve their communication goals to maximise their participation in their everyday activities!🌟

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is not currently a disability included on List A or B with the NDIS, when 1 in 14 Australians have DLD!
Would you consider signing this petition to help The DLD Project meet with the Minister for the NDIS to advocate for those with DLD, and propose actions which would support people with DLD to access much needed NDIS funding in the future.
The petition takes less than 5mins to complete!!

🌸🌼Happy Mother's Day from all the team at SLL! We hope all our amazing SLL mothers are showered with love today. And we also think of all those who are new mothers; long to be mothers; chose not to be mothers; those who have been disappointed by their mother; and those who have lost mothers or children. We hope you feel loved today.

Better Speech & Hearing Month 🗣️ ➕👂🏼
This May, we wanted to raise awareness about otitis media (middle ear infection), a common illness in children early on in their childhood. Otitis media (OM) occurs when the middle-ear becomes inflamed. There are many types of OM including: acute OM, OM with effusion (OME), and chronic OME.
OME (or “glue ear”) occurs when fluid builds up behind the eardrum, and this can lead to hearing loss. Consequently, OME can impact on a child’s ability to process language, and their ability to hear (or accurately hear) speech sounds, and grammatical morphemes (e.g., plural /s/) in their early years.
We are raising awareness about OM because it can go unnoticed (and therefore hearing loss can also go unnoticed), which may lead to speech and/or language delays if left untreated.
If your child presents with pain, fluid leaking from the ear, vomiting, fever, trouble hearing, and/or recurrent ear infections, visit your doctor.
For more information about speech and language developmental milestones in early childhood, head to Speech Pathology Australia for their Communication Milestones Kit. See references
