Brisbane Vocal Jazz Festival Day Four: 6th. August 2023
Kings and Queens of Jazz.
Kings and Queens of Jazz has been a sure fire winner each year, and this year was no exception. Backed by the John Reeves Trio (with Samuel Vincent on bass and Lachlan Hawkins on drums), 6 local singers shared the songs that were important to them in their journeys. The first set, kicked off the night with Catriona Lincoln paying homage to the very cool Blossom Dearie followed by Stephanie Taylor, who showed off her musical diversity tackling Nancy Wilson’s jazz, soul and pop influences. Frazer Goodman ramped up the end of the first set with his own unique blend of jazz, rhythm and blues and soul on piano and voice, capturing the spirit of UK trailblazer, Georgie Fame. The 2nd set started off with Ingrid James filling in for Adam Lopez, at short notice, with songs from Antonio Carlos Jobim, inviting the audience to join in on her first song, then offering some lively Brasilian waltzes and sambas. June Garber captured the essence of Shirley’s Horn’s signature phrasing, followed by a respectful and dynamic homage to the soulful Renee Geyer by Aaron West on guitar and voice. With an excited full house on board, the wrapped with the 6 singers jamming and harmonising over the classic song, “Sunny”. (Photos courtesy: David Pratt)

Monica, a weaver of stories and a sw***er of songs, struck many a chord in front of a captivated audience. Her energy, spontaniety and commitment to tell fascinating stories as well as sing up a storm had everyone on the edge of their seats wanting more at the end of the night. Thank you to David Pratt for covering all the official photos on the night!
Brisbane Vocal Jazz Festival Night Two: 4th. August 2023
Jacki Cooper & The John Morrison Trio.
Jacki & John hit the mark with Homegrown Songs - a mix of Jacki’s tunes, some of the favourite tunes she recorded with George Golla and paying her respects to her contemporaries in jazz.
The night was full of delightful surprises with intricate arrangements wrapped in great storytelling. Locals Wil Sargisson and Elliott Parker completed the tight John Morrison Trio on the night. Another great instalment of photos from David Pratt!
Brisbane Vocal Jazz Festival Night One: 3rd. August 2023
Jazz Singers' Jam Night 22nd Anniversary
This year, as always, to kick off the Brisbane Vocal Jazz Festival, there was a cast of 19 singers plus some special guests, including Mark Pradella on sax and drummer from The Con – Oscar Langton.
The vocalists showed up in force to celebrate the Jazz Singers’ Jam Night’s 22nd Anniversary, and the jam nights have been nestled in at the Brisbane Jazz Club for the past 15 years out of those 22. Two of the singers at the anniversary have been performing since the early jams, for at least 20 years – starting off at Brisbane’s Travelodge Jazz’n’Blues Bar in Roma Street, followed by a decent stint at The Bank in the Valley, a few months at Manfreds, then settling in for a while at Maggie Blacks Jazz Club before she sold up and left for the UK. Singers tonight included: Pearly Black, Penny Connolly-Coates, Dave Spicer, Pete Vance, Yani Mills and the Spinal Chords (Sopranos – Alex van den Broek & Gina Bingham; Altos – Lynne Eisentrager & Donna Miller; Basses – Pete Cox and David Venz; Tenors – Yani & David Pilbeam); Steph Larman, Sean Andrews, Levi Kikkert, Sue Bond (who opened the show and features as our cover photo) and of course, founder & host - Ingrid James. The house band hit the mark – Dave Spicer, Samuel Vincent and Dom Machen.
Photos courtesy of David Pratt who covered all the events of the festival flying solo! Big thank you 🙂
Also many thanks to Brisbane Jazz Club, Mark Smith on sound, Lisle Kelly (bar manager), and his fab team, Keanu Christie, Gitta, Rachel, Vanessa, Karli, Hamilton, Helen, Carol, Irene, Alan, David, Paul (the Prez), Alan, Jan, Tania, BJC committee and volunteers!
