Ainslie Community Pantry

The first Ainslie Community Pantry began in January 2021. It is lovingly cared for by the Buy Nothing Ainslie Community.

It is located at the unused iconic Canberra bus stop at the corner of Majura Avenue and Officer Crescent.

National Volunteer Week is almost over - but our love for all those who help the Pantries and therefore our community never dies.

We want to send a big shout out to the volunteers who help our pantries EVERY DAY. There are some delightful souls in the community who really go that extra bit, to help check on the pantries, clean up, replenish, fundraise, network to resource the pantries that little bit extra..... and more, every day, every week. To those volunteers we send out a huge and heartfelt THANK YOU.

What you do is so vital to the community and so so so appreciated.

Mother's Day is coming soon on Sunday May 12. We have a gift crate set up again, please come and pick up something for your mum or chosen mum.

If you have Mother's Day gifts to share, like candles, soaps, books, lovely scarves, treats, cards, they are so welcome - anything you'd gift a friend, we'd love to receive. ❤️🙏 You are most welcome to come and pop them into the crate.

** Bonus fresh sausage rolls from the Inner North Pantries Network fundraiser this morning. Pop along and grab some for lunch. **

Thanks to Pam's Pantry for the sausage rolls, Danny for an epic cook up and selling at the fundraiser and dropping excess to the pantry.

Thanks to the awesome Chrissy at O'Connor Community Pantry for running the fabulous community fundraisers that help keep the pantries supplied with food. We rely on these for our funding throughout the year.

Huge thank you to our community who drop by to add supplies for neighbours that need a helping hand. It's so wonderful to see food and items that our volunteer team haven't added.

** Please only add in items you'd happily give to a friend, items need to show care rather than 'clear out'. That's community at its best. **

Our Inner North Pantries wouldn't be here without all the women who show love and care for them.

We have Chrissy who started off the Inner North Pantries and runs the O'Connor Community Pantry and the many fabulous, legendary Inner North Pantry network fundraisers.

Amy, Kate, Jaeme, Robbie who look after the Ainslie Community Pantry; Jaeme and Jaci who do our bread runs. And Kate R and Chrissy who do our social media. Anna who champions and collects our redeemables for the ACT Container Deposit Scheme.

Kate W who runs the Braddon Street Pantry.

Kathleen who runs the Watson Community Pantry and delivers our weekly fruit & veg.

Pam at Pam's Pantry who looks after us and keeps us in supplies of all kinds - from toiletries to kids things and more.

Sam at Box Divvy ACT - Watson - Street, who sorts out our fruit & vegetable order.

Greta and Toni at The Gardens at Limestone for the fresh fruit & veg straight from their beautiful gardens.

Our gorgeous pantry fairy who still so generously drops us items and cans.

Our regular donator, Kim.

Women bring the heart to our community pantries and we love and cherish them for it. These women all juggle their work for the community through the pantries with family, jobs, and their own lives - thank you 🙏❤️🙏

Still fresh produce from yesterday's Box Divvy ACT - Watson - Street drop from our volunteers and this evening also some great bread and bread rolls from the Ainslie Bakehouse ❤️

If in need, please drop down and take some - the bread freezes well too!

We aim to give what we can and only take what we need.

If you visit by car, please don't park on the verge or block any neighbouring driveways. Please park in the bus bay area across the road and use the raised zebra crossing to head over and visit the Ainslie Community Pantry .

Thank you so much to our regular volunteers for taking the time to pick up and deliver these, to help our neighbours in need. And thank you to all who donate - as a grassroots Pantry, it can only help neighbours, if others come by and donate food and toiletries.

Hoping everyone has a lovely Canberra Day long weekend.

Our wonderful volunteer Kate discovered a bag of tear and share breads - Hawaiian, BBQ, Margherita - she's beautifully arranged them so they get less squashed. Head on down to grab them whilst they're fresh. School lunches sorted!

Thank you to the mystery donor, please do message the page so we can tell visitors to head down.

Hi Community

We love all donations for our neighbours in need, that's food, fruit, veg, toiletries, nappies, period and incontinence products.

We are too tiny to take a Queen size bed or bike frames. Please gift these in the Buy Nothing Ainslie group or your local Buy Nothing group. We want to make sure that our space remains welcoming and accessible.

We would love it if someone could pick this up, especially if they need one. We have limited capacity to manage removal and processing items that need to be disposed of.

Please help us out and make sure we can stay in this location.

Get in touch if you're able to assist with removal

Thank you!!

We've got another delivery of bread at the pantry today, come and grab some for you, your neighbours and your freezer too (you can defrost and refresh it in the oven whenever you want!). There's more coming later today, and in this heat it's better picked up early before it gets too hot - so take whatever you need! 🥖🍞❤️

08/01/2024

Come on down and grab some delicious bread! Still so good to eat (especially in this weather!), but the loaves need to be picked up. We have many baguettes which are perfect for freezing - when you are ready to eat just dampen the loaf, wrap in alfoil (if you like) and refresh in the oven, à la this article: https://www.thekitchn.com/best-method-for-reviving-stale-bread-23499468. Or, freeze slices ready for toasting - or make croutons or breadcrumbs to freeze for cooking! The options are endless, so please help yourself to whatever you would like :)

Happy Birthday to the Ainslie Community Pantry 🥳❤️

This great community resource has been running for THREE years 👏

Thank you to the team of volunteers who have been keeping things going. Thank you to everyone who donates and helps take care of the Pantry.

It has helped so many and will continue to do so - a lovely way to bring the community together ❤️

As a grassroots Pantry, it only functions and helps through regular donations of food, toiletries, baby products and pet food/needs.

Thank you ❤️

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!

A HUGE thanks and gratitude to Anna for suggesting we collected containers for raising funds for the Ainslie Community Pantry . We've managed to collect over 35,000 (1,000 more than when Anna received her special Thank you tin angel below!)

A reminder: please keep your cans, bottles and containers from your New Year's celebrations and events. We can pick them up or you can drop them to the Vinnie's Express drop in Dickson and use our pantry account number: 0432 647 136. Drop off points in Ainslie are on Stephen Street and O'Connell Street.

We use the funds to buy fresh fruit & veg from the fabulous Sam at Box Divvy ACT - Watson - Street for the four Inner North Pantries - Ainslie Community Pantry , Braddon Street Pantry , O'Connor Community Pantry and Watson Community Pantry

24/12/2023

Merry Christmas morning! We hope you have a relaxing and safe day, however you may spend this day.

Our fresh fruit & vegetables this week from Box Divvy were covered by the sale of our fabulous fundraising teacher gifts (the gorgeous upcycled Tin Angels), which were given with donations in the names of Mrs Brill and Laura Egan-Burt. With these donations, we were able to cover delicious wholesome food for the Ainslie, Braddon, O'Connor and Watson pantries. We were delighted to be able to cover the costs of the fresh produce this week as currently our collection funds from the recycling of redeemable cans and bottles through the ACT Container Deposit Scheme aren't enough. We always think it's worth getting fresh produce for our Pantries as we know our visitors really love it - fresh produce is so important for everybody, and can be so out of reach for some.

Thank you for giving gifts with a heart, especially at this time of year when we are pulled in so many directions at once. Supporting our local community is so rewarding ❤️❤️

18/12/2023

Our thanks to Mohammed at Helping ACT for the fruit & vegetables for the Inner North Pantries Network. As always, a massive thank you to the support from wonderful Pam from Pam's Pantry, who collected and delivered these donations to the Ainslie and Inner North Pantries Coordinator, to share across Ainslie, Braddon Street Pantry, O'Connor Community Pantry and Watson Community Pantry.

Coordinating, storing and distributing donated items across the pantries wouldn't happen without the efforts of our volunteers: without which none of these community-supporting resources would exist.

Thank you to all involved and all who donate to the pantries ❤️🙏

12/12/2023

Pantry supporters!

As the festive season approaches with parties, and celebrations at work and home - please give a thought to saving redeemable bottles, cans and tetra/cardboard containers for the Inner North Community Pantries ( Ainslie Community Pantry , Braddon Street Pantry , O'Connor Community Pantry and Watson Community Pantry ).

As you get into the Christmas Spirit - if it's a 10c one - we'd love your redeemables. Help us supply the pantries with food, fruit & veg and have fun whilst doing it!

Community is the heart of the Pantry. We rely on our neighbours to keep the pantry running and well cared for.

We know the cost of living pressures mean we're seeing more visitors to the pantry. It also means we are receiving fewer donations. We exist week to week and hope that a new source of funding shows up to keep the drawers supplied.

We are so grateful to the following special people that make our lives easier:

• Naomi for the generous donation that our bank account gratefully welcomed

• Roseanne for choosing to support the Inner North Pantries as her leaving gift - such kindness and generosity for the community

• Tracey and her daughter who did a bulk shop and brought weekend cheer to the pantry a few weekends back

The community pantry is a symbol of care, acts of kindness and paying forward when we can. Thank you to those that can on behalf of those that can't. You are making an unbelievable difference and making our volunteers lives easier.

We're in this together.

The Inner North Pantries are the community response to the huge and growing need for food in our neighbourhoods. We know this is a really, really tough time for many.

Our network keeps the Ainslie, Braddon, O'Connor and Watson pantries running - with less of everything - less funds, food and redeemables. Our fabulous volunteers were recognised for their unrelenting hard work with a nomination for the Volunteering ACT Awards. We think they're all winners.

We give an enormous thanks to the Ainslie Community Pantry volunteers: Robbie Beale, Kate Gorman, Jaeme Ogilvie and Kate Ritchings. Kate Waterford who runs the Braddon Street Pantry . Chrissy Schwarz who runs the O'Connor Community Pantry . Kathleen Aguirre who runs the Watson Community Pantry . And special thanks to Pam Zielke who runs Pam's Pantry and gives the Inner North Pantry Network so much.

Our pantries are little symbols of love and care for those that are struggling. A chance to take a breath for a moment when things are tough. As one visitor wrote:

‘You have made my day…even week! In a time when I feel very isolated and alone, it means a lot that someone cares. Thanks a million.’

Thank you!!

2023 Canberra's Choice Award 06/11/2023

*Volunteering ACT Canberra's Choice Awards 2023*

Amongst all the examples of wonderful community spirit, please consider casting a vote for our network. It's fabulous to recognise our hardworking volunteers for the work they do. The Inner North Pantries Network volunteers are rare unicorns and so committed to keeping our pantries going even when times are tough. All our volunteers juggle work, family and life commitments, and still fit in helping run the Pantries.

We are all so grateful that our neighbours have embraced community looking after community, and help us keep the pantries in Ainslie, Braddon, O'Connor, Watson, cared for and replenished. It's hard, unrelenting work and often thankless. We couldn't do it without you and we couldn't do it without our special volunteers. We're so lucky to have every one of you. We already have a winning team.
