THE WAR WIDOWS’ GUILD ESTABLISHED 1945
Our Founder

The War Widows’ Guild of Australia was founded by the late Mrs Jessie Mary Vasey in 1945 in Melbourne. Mrs Vasey’s husband Major General George Vasey encouraged her to help the wives of the men who died while serving their country. He planned to help her in this quest on his return from the war, but this was not to be as Major General Vasey was killed in a plane crash on 5 March, just six months before the war ended.

Jessie Vasey a War Widow herself then began uniting all War Widows so that as one, they could express their needs. The Guild began as a craft Guild to supplement meagre pensions but went on to become a powerful lobby group.

Mrs Vasey visited each State and gradually encouraged the formation of the State Guilds. In 1965 she visited Canberra and encouraged the very small group of ACT Widows to form their own Guild. Currently the Guild has about 200 members.

The aims of the War Widows’ Guild of Australia are to look after the welfare of War Widows and their dependents; to watch over and protect their interests. To achieve these aims the Guild is concerned with War Widows’ entitlements and provides information, advice and companionship to its members. The Guild also publishes a magazine three times a year which addresses War Widows’ entitlements and provides information about local and interstate news.

Monthly meetings are held at 1.30pm at Legacy House, 33 Geils Place, Deakin on the first Saturday of each month followed by afternoon tea.
