This morning David Smith MP and I participated in Zonta Club of Canberra’s Peace Bell Ringing ceremony which is the culmination of the International 16 Days of Activism, Saying No to Violence Against Women.
The bell was rung for each of the 42 women tragically lost to violence this year. I rang the bell for Kayla aged just 29.
We must do so much better than this.
This morning we attended the Zonta Says No - Canberra Rotary Peace Bell Ringing, hosted by the Zonta Club of Canberra Breakfast. This event is part of the International 16 Days of Activism, which Zonta world-wide, recognises as Saying NO to Violence to Women. 10 December, the final day of Activism, represents Human Rights Day, and is why it is chosen as the day on which to ring the Peace Bell.
Today we rang the bell for 42 Australian women who lost their lives this year from domestic violence. These are the numbers of which we know about.
The bell was also rang for all First Nations women, New Zealand women, children and men who have also lost their lives through domestic violence this year in Australia.
It was a sombre and cold event, but heartwarming, doing something to remember these lives lost.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please call 1800 respect (1800 737 732). A simple phone call could save a life.
