ANU's second-largest law society and the only community for those passionate about international law
The ILS runs a range of events including academic panels, careers events and networking events. If you are someone who sees law as a pathway to explore and achieve beyond Australia's shores, or wants to get involved in an exciting student society, the ANU ILS is for you!
✨ Event announcement! ✨
We have an exciting careers panel coming up next month with none other than:
- Human Rights Commissioner, Lorraine Finlay
- Honorary Professor at ANU, Matthew Neuhaus
- Ansha Krishnan, a legal advisor at the International Committee of the Red Cross Regional Delegation in the Pacific
Keep an eye out for updates!
On Tuesday we were honoured to be joined by AsPr Matthew Zagor at the ANU College of Law 📚
It was an insightful evening, with conversation ranging from examining the Australian judiciary’s approach to human rights and refugee law to an exploration of ‘safe legal pathways’ and European intervention in the Sahel 🌍
We extend our gratitude to Matthew for sharing his expertise, and to our members for engaging in discussion and asking thought-provoking questions. Your participation enriches our community and contributes to fostering a deeper understanding of these complex issues.
Here’s to more enlightening conversations ahead! ✨
Exciting opportunity ✨: Join the Global Institute for Women's Leadership - ANU this Thursday to hear Hon Julie Bishop in conversation with Dr Elise Stephenson discussing gender diversity and representation in international affairs 🌏
Women and gender-diverse people remain frequently sidelined, undervalued, and overlooked in international affairs.
Join us at The Australian National University to hear Julie Bishop and Elise Stephenson discuss the lack of gender representation and diversity in international affairs, consider how best to advance change and discuss Elise's new book, "The face of the nation".
The event will be followed by a reception with drinks, light canapés and the opportunity for networking.

CANDIDATE STATEMENT - ANAIS SCOTT
***************************
I am extremely interested in the Vice-President (Administration) role because I would love the opportunity to expand my ILS knowledge and experience to oversee the success of the society next year. As ILS’ current Events Director, I have a great understanding of how ILS operates and what is required by someone in this position to make a real difference. Working multiple jobs has taught me how to stay organised, proactive and manage various responsibilities on a consistent basis, including during assessment periods. I have played, captained and coached netball for over 10 years which has honed my leadership and teamwork skills, strengthening my ability to act as a point of contact for directors and other members of the committee. I am very responsible with my time and have strong attention to detail which aligns with the skills required for someone in this position. I possess a strong work ethic and am internally motivated to succeed. I am motivated to apply for this position because I would like the opportunity to challenge myself and utilise my leadership and effective communicating skills in adding value in this role.
Furthermore, I am eager to be the Careers Director as I recognise the importance of networking and professional development opportunities which enhance the potential of law students interested in international law. My event experience as the interim Events Officer at the ACT Law Society for over a year developed my ability in coordinating people and venues in order to have a successful event. My time management skills have improved in order to successfully handle multiple commitments. My vision for the position includes the introduction of a mentoring program where students are paired with experienced professionals. This would be an enriching opportunity for students to gain support and guidance, leading to personal growth and professional skill development. I would also like to strengthen the relationship with the LSS so we could introduce hybrid events which would increase interest and networking opportunities for people who are interested in similar fields.
I would also love to continue my current position as the Events Director of the ILS. The experience I have gained this year has been valuable and its success demonstrates my ability to coordinate with external sources, work with others in the ILS executive, and remain flexible in the fast-paced, unpredictable environment of event management. I am motivated to apply for this position because it has been rewarding to see first-hand how well-run events help forge meaningful connections and friendships. Whilst I aim to continue running the current ILS events as they have proven successful in terms of engagement and participation, my vision for the position includes hosting more networking events per semester, such as trivia nights.

VOTING IS NOW OPEN FOR VICE PRESIDENT (ADMINISTRATION) - 2
CANDIDATE STATEMENT - CHARLOTTE KUTRA
***************************
During my full year term as Careers Director at the ILS, I have been extremely committed to this society as seen by me organising multiple careers panels, connecting the society with external stakeholders and attending every meeting and event. It is clear that this society is my priority and I would love to continue my dedicated approach through the role of VP in 2024.
I can bring a lot to the role as I am highly committed and passionate about connecting young law students with practical international law experience and opportunities. I have excellent teamwork skills that will be brought to the role through coordinating and cooperating with the ILS executives. I would be suitable for the role due to my leadership experience through being a supervisor at my previous employment, where I have experience delegating tasks.
I am currently a paralegal at the ATO, displaying my integrity, hard work and experience within the legal field. I have previously held a role as a volunteer paralegal at the HIV/AIDS Legal Centre, where I demonstrated my eagerness to benefit and aid the wider community, which I would apply to the ANU community. These roles have shown that I have excellent administrative skills that make me extremely suitable for the role of VP, as I will be able to proficiently follow ANUSA procedure, maintain and store documents as needed by the Executive, conduct intakes and keep meetings minutes.
I have a number of policy ideas, including engaging with external professionals and companies to secure sponsorships and partnerships for the society. I would also foster ILS’s industry relationships in order to create opportunities and connections for its members. In this way, I would be advancing and promoting the welfare and goals of the ANU ILS. As VP, I would also be committed to helping out the President with any work and ensure the executive is well run.
I have experience and skills in public and professional oration, ensuring I would successfully foster external ILS industry relations. I was a guest speaker in 2021 for the Catenian Club group, where I was asked to speak on the effects of COVID during HSC. This was a great experience as I wrote my own speech and spoke in front of a large audience in order to widen their knowledge. Additionally, I competed in novice negotiations in this year at ANU which helped develop my public speaking skills as I employed formal legalese language and effectively negotiated for an outcome.
I would love to continue being a part of the ILS Executive in order to continue to take part in an impactful society and expand my contribution to ANU. I have been highly enjoying contributing to the ILS this year, as I find international law of great importance. It is essential to keeping peace, protecting human rights and prosecuting international crimes. Thus, I would love to continue to be able to help run a society that allows students to discuss and engage in international law.
