Libraries ACT and ArtsACT are excited to announce ACT Book of the Year shortlist finalist ‘The Measure of Sorrow: Stories by Joseph Ashley-Smith . Ashley-Smith publisher: Meerkat Press
Judges comments:
The Measure of Sorrow is a quality collection of short stories crafted by J. Ashley-Smith that effortlessly lead the reader from the edge of reality and into the world of speculative fiction. Ashley-Smith masterfully blends colloquialisms with mystery, where the reader is offered seemingly normal, everyday situations that plunge and twist into unexpected, wonderous, and imaginative destinations.
This collection is diverse in its themes but ultimately pulses with imagery. It is an accomplished example of its genre that speaks with the confidence of a storyteller able to make the reader leave the real world behind them.

Judges comments:
The Great Gallipoli Escape is an experiential and realistic gateway for young readers to grasp the horror and tragedy of a significant period of world history. Jackie French presents a well-researched retelling of an historical event through the lens of the main character, sixteen-year-old Nipper, whose experiences further serve to highlight the costs of war. The book has genuine moments of pathos and drama intertwined with bleakness as tragic events unfold in the trenches.

Have you recently Read ‘Bright Shining: How Grace Changes Everything’ by Julia Baird and wondering what others think?
Our latest book review features Michael McKernan’s thoughts…
“Baird writes so beautifully, so lyrically, of her time on the reef that those of us who have not been there can relish the experience, too. In this account Baird seeks to uplift the spirit, the souls, of her readers who have been with her to some of the murkier parts of life. In her celebration of the richness and variety of nature and of natural beauty she achieves a peace in herself, and in her readers, too, I suspect.” – Michael Mckernan

Join the Libraries ACT Book of the Month Facebook group and read ‘The Way We Are’ by Hugh Mackay.
Australia's leading social psychologist examines our society today and asks timely and urgent questions about its future.
Life is messy. Relationships are complex. Outcomes are uncertain. Yet none of our differences—whether based on ethnicity, politics, religion, cultural tastes and preferences, or gender—are nearly as significant as the humanity we share.
Amidst our epidemics of loneliness, anxiety and depression, and the impacts of entrenched poverty and ubiquitous technology, The Way We Are examines the major trends that are shaking the foundations of the Australian way of life.
If you feel like chatting about the characters, location or plot twists, come and share at our own dedicated Book of the Month Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/share/JXEepVgb8GWJKSju/
