Emissions from Australian coal-fired power stations rise as wind and hydro dip 01/09/2024

Emissions from ageing coal-fired power plants are rising as renewable energy use declines. This increased pollution accelerates climate change and poses serious health risks. It’s not just about missing climate targets; it's a public health emergency.

Heat waves pose a serious threat to human life; extreme heat kills more Australians than any other climate disaster. Climate change is here, and it’s escalating. No one can remain untouched by the effects of rising heat and increasing heatwave frequency.

We need urgent action to reduce carbon emissions to limit the number and intensity of future heat waves.

Longer, hotter summers are coming, and it is crucial to stay informed and take necessary precautions to stay safe. Visit dea.org.au/heat_and_health_fact_sheet to learn more about protecting your in the heat.

David Pocock, Greens call for investigation into $1.5 billion Middle Arm investment 'shrouded in secrecy' 23/08/2024

The senate inquiry report for Middle Arm Industrial Precinct outlines a raft of concerns about the human health and climate impacts associated with the facility.

David Pocock, Greens call for investigation into $1.5 billion Middle Arm investment 'shrouded in secrecy' In a senate inquiry report, the Greens and high-profile crossbencher David Pocock have called for an investigation into the federal government's $1.5 billion commitment to the Middle Arm Industrial Precinct and recommended funds be directed away from supporting fossil fuel projects.

22/08/2024

In this video from the Middle Arm Enquiry, our executive director, Dr Kate Wylie, points out that the Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precint’s website clearly states that all its planned industries revolve around gas.

Gas is a health hazard. It contributes to global warming and threatens the future of our planet. The proposed Middle Arm Gas Precinct poses severe health risks for all residents.

With the NT election in 2 days, we’d like to reiterate: putting profits before people is morally bankrupt. We need MPs who put the health of the people ahead of the interests of the fossil fuel industry. Cast your vote wisely.

Putting profits before people is morally bankrupt.

It is disappointing to hear today that despite the clear health warnings, both major parties support the proposed Middle Arm Gas and Petrochemicals Hub.

With the NT election only days away, it’s important to think about your health and our climate when you vote. Which candidates will prioritise your health over profits?

Your vote is your voice—use it to demand a future where we put the health of the people ahead of the interests of the fossil fuel industry.

On Wednesday, health professionals from across Australia joined forces with Comms Declare: Climate Crisis to deliver a powerful message: Fossil Fuels are a Health Hazard.

It was great to see so many MPs attend this event and acknowledge the health risks associated with fossil fuels. However, there appears to be a dissonance within the government, as they continue to approve new coal, oil and gas projects despite being aware of these deadly health impacts.

We are incredibly proud of our DEA members for taking a stand in Parliament and advocating for the health of our people and the planet. Now, it’s the government’s turn to act.

You can help us make a difference. Sign our petition, read the report, and email your local MP to urge them to phase out to protect . For more information, head to www.dea.org.au
