Amber presented a great training on sensory considerations in positive behaviour support this week.
She covered the sensory systems and how sensory needs present in people with Autism and other disabilities. She covered PBS practitioners collaborating with OTs, how we would consider senses in assessments, when behaviour has a sensory function in FBAs, and when you may consider avoiding or seeking sensations for other function based recommendations. We spoke about strategies and how behaviour practitioners can use their understanding of sensory systems to help improve quality of life.
OTs who are also PBS practitioners are awesome!
We had a great trip down to the Katherine disability expo last week and it was lovely to chat to about regional and remove disability services, and the need for greater awareness across the NT about how restrictive practices should be reduced in NDIS and mainstream services.
Thanks for a great event.

Ria and Alana have completed day 1 of a workshop with Greg Hanley on the PFA and SBT approaches.
The Practical Functional Assessment is a fast and contemporary way to complete a FBA and assess severe problem behaviour in a safe way. This is done through identifying the synthesised contingencies of reinforcement for a person and safely testing conditions that have ‘precursor behaviour’ and those that don’t. The idea is that you safely avoid escalation of behaviour from the outset.
It then uses a ‘skills based treatment’ approach that teaches functional communication, tolerance training and individualised equivalent skills for the person.
We love furthering our learning and bringing it back to help us deliver the best quality service we can to our participants, families and teams in Darwin and the North of Australia.
