Regarding adjoining land that BSNT have an intention to build a meditation hall - ABC News 25.10.2020

19/10/2020

Buddhist Society NT needs your support in order to secure parcel of land next to the Leanyer Buddhist Temple.
The BSNT committee has been made aware that a community organisation has put in an application for the parcel of land next to the Leanyer Buddhist Temple.

We kindly request you to submit your objection into the proposed grant of land as a BSNT community member by sending an email or post to the Senior Director, Crown Land Estate, Department Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics. Email: [email protected] | Post box address: GPO Box 1680, Darwin NT 0801. Kindly BCC your emails to [email protected] for our track records. You ONLY HAVE 10 MORE DAYS to do this.

BSNT has had a great interest in this parcel of the land for a long period of time and has been actively attempting to submit an application to grant this land for BSNT service expansion.
We are great friends of Chinese Australian Friendship Association and support their wishes to create a community centre and outdoor entertainment centre development for use of their members. We do, however, believe there are many other suitable land options for this venture that don’t hinder the ability for the expansion of BSNT’s services for the multi-cultural, multi-ethnic community we serve.
Leanyer Buddhist Centre has provided it's harmonious and spiritual services to the broader community living in Darwin. It is an inclusive and welcoming place where people can come and learn more about Buddhism, meditation, spirituality or participate in community events. In this way, the Buddhist Centre fosters connections between the various cultural and community groups who make up it’s members and the broader Darwin community promoting cross-cultural understanding and multi-faith dialogue.
Further, we strongly believe that the said parcel of land is not suitable for a community centre and outdoor entertainment centre due to the following reasons. The activities of the proposed community centre and outdoor entertainment centre;
• will interrupt the local residents in the area with noise, traffic congestion and alcohol consumption
• will interrupt the Buddhist centre activities such as meditation and chanting and language teaching with noise, traffic congestion and alcohol consumption
• will hinder the further development and expansion of the services continued over the last 40 years by BSNT as this is the only available crown land for developments in the vicinity of the Buddhist Centre.
• will reduce the available parking space for BSNT's larger community events, where parking for 100-200 vehicles is generally needed. At the moment this amount of parking is achievable for us due to the vacant block, however if this were no longer available there would be far more vehicles parked through the surrounding roads during these events which could disturb the residents and their peace of mind. (Note: BSNT’s proposed plans to develop the vacant block include plans for parking).
• will change the community landscape of Leanyer, especially the peacefulness and harmony added by the Buddhist Centre to the Leanyer neighbourhood.
We hope you will consider these concerns views of BSNT, the neighbourhood of Leanyer with regards to said grant of land next to the Buddhist temple.
We hope you will extend your fullest support in this time and thank you in advance.
