Last week, we were delighted to host Minister Ingrid Stitt MP at our Dianella Village Aged Care Hostel, Kilmore for a special visit as she toured our facility and met with residents and staff. We're proud to showcase the impact of the State Government's investment in aged care across regional Victoria.
Minister Stitt expressed pride in the vital work of aged care facilities in providing options for older Victorians to age in place within their communities. She commended Dianella for its homely atmosphere and high-quality service, evidenced by its impressive four-star rating in the Federal Government's Aged Care Star Ratings.

Meet Dr Eric Daniel, Colorectal Surgeon, Northern Health.
Q: What is your coffee order?
A: Long macchiato.
Q: Tell us about your role at Northern Health?
A: Iโm a Colorectal Surgeon which is a sub-speciality dealing with bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor dysfunction and proctology. I finished medical school in 2006 and my post graduate training in 2017 and started as a consultant in 2018 at Northern Health.
The Colorectal Unit is a part of the Division of General Surgery, and we work closely with the Gastroenterology Unit, stomal therapy, nursing staff and Allied Health. It is a busy unit for our junior medical staff, but I think our unit culture makes it a favourable rotation. Well, I hope it does!
Q: If you werenโt a surgeon, what would you have been instead?
A: Either a failed writer or a terrible lawyer. In both cases, still living with my parents.

Northern Health is committed to delivering patient-centred care. Partnering with consumers is central to ensuring that our patients and their carers are at the core of all the work we do ๐
Standard 2, known as the Partnering with Consumers Standard, is about fostering a collaborative relationship between healthcare providers and those we serve. This means involving consumers in the planning, design, delivery, and evaluation of our services.
Today, we're excited to share the story of Carol Burnett. Carol is not only a retired nurse, teacher, educator and manager, but also a dedicated volunteer at Northern Health since 2019. She's currently a valuable member of our Consumer Participation team, where she continues to make a difference in shaping our approach to patient-centred care.

A new test, similar to COVID-19 rapid antigen tests, could detect a common infection in expecting mothers within minutes, potentially saving the lives of 150,000 newborns around the world every year.๐ถ
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) bacteria is carried by one in five pregnant women, and GBS infection can cause serious complications, leading to preterm births, stillbirths and neonatal deaths. The good news is the infection, once detected, is easily treatable with standard antibiotics.
RMIT University is part of a consortium that has just won $3 million in funding in the latest Cooperative Research Centres Projects (CRC-P) round for StrepSureยฎ, a sensor technology thatโs anticipated to be able to identify GBS bacteria within minutes.
Northern Health is delighted to partner with RMIT, EXSEN Biotech and Atomo Diagnostics for this important trial.
Associate Professor Prahlad Ho, Chair of Northern Health Research Executive Committee and Divisional Director of Diagnostic Services, said Northern Health was proud and excited to be the clinical partner in the project, which will help improve clinical outcomes for babies.

February marks Ovarian Cancer Awareness month and is dedicated to raising awareness and providing support for those affected by ovarian cancer ๐
Ovarian cancer is a malignant tumour that grows in one or both ovaries and is the ninth most common cancer in Australia. According to Cancer Council Australia, it is estimated that each year, about 1720 Australians are diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
โUnfortunately, at present, it is difficult to detect ovarian cancer early as symptoms tend not to develop until the cancer is more advanced. Symptoms can be vague and include persistent abdominal pain and bloating. If you experience any persistent new concerns, you should see your doctor in a timely manner,โ said Dr Frances Barnett, Medical Oncologist, Northern Health.

Meet Anne Bright, Project Manager, Northern Imaging Victoria.

I have never developed a taste for coffee. Terrible stuff! I generally order an Earl Grey tea if out with friends, but my current favourite at home is Black Rose tea from the Tea Centre.

I joined Northern Health in April 2023 as a Project Manager to bring imaging in-house under Northern Imaging Victoria. I continue in that role drawing upon my past experience as a Chief Radiographer to help grow and build the service. The current projects are bringing imaging in-house at Kilmore District Hospital, commissioning of PET, transition of point of care devices from the old PACS to the new, and development of services at Broadmeadows and our community sites, with much more on the horizon.

Listen to music and non-fiction audiobooks. I like walking with my husband, enjoying the sun and breeze or visiting art galleries. When time permits, I enjoy baking or working on a craft project.

Q: Why and how did you choose your specialty?
A: In Year 9, my class visited a nursing home. During the visit, we were buddied up with a resident, which saw us working with the resident to complete an โabout me projectโ on the residentโs life. Before this, Iโd never been to a nursing home. Spending that time working alongside the elderly and getting to know their life stories is where my passion for aged care began.
Q: What do you like most about your role?
A: I have such a passion for working alongside the elderly. I love being given the opportunity to make a positive difference in the residentโs day-to-day life and their overall quality of life. I enjoy getting to know the residents, learning their life stories, meeting their families, seeing the smiles on their faces, being able to provide them with the care they deserve and having the opportunity to make a positive difference in their lives, not only for the residents but their family too.
Q: Where is a favourite place youโve travelled to, and why?
A: Broome โ I always wanted to visit Broome after watching the movie Bran Nue Dae. I loved the different scenery and the colours of the beaches.

Dianella Village Hostel officially opened on 21 August 1997, six years after the opening of Caladenia Nursing Home?
Dianella, named after the Roman goddess of hunting, is also a perennial herb which grows locally in the area. Much like our consumers, dianellas are full of character, displaying tremendous variation within the species as well as the traits of hardiness and beauty.
Have you spotted these sparkly Christmas trees on your way into Kilmore?
Residents at Caladenia Nursing Home and Dianella Hostel have tapped into their creative sides to decorate these trees on behalf of the Kilmore Community Centre and Kilmore Men's Shed.
We love being a part of Kilmore's Christmas spirit ๐

Caladenia Nursing Home welcomed its first ever resident on 17 June 1991? The building was officially opened on 11 August that same year.
Caladenia Nursing Home is named after a native orchid that grows around the Monument Hill area just above the nursing home. The name was chosen as our emblem after a competition was conducted within the community. A photograph of the caladenia orchid hangs proudly in the home ๐ธ
