A new flower emerging the garden this morning made me think back to the 'blending' exercises we explored in Aikido this week. With two universal energies, yang (directing) and yin (allowing), unless we know how to negotiate them, conflict or clash can arise. The bloom expanding out of the stalk of the plant is directing or yang energy and the stalk succumbs to the yin or opening energy. What would the outcome look like if these two energies weren't harmonious?

The history of Shiatsu consists of a set of chapters written by authors with such different visions that it is very difficult to discover a line of continuity between them. Like a Netflix series, where each season has a different writer, a different producer, a completely different cast and a different historical background. All seasons bear the name Shiatsu, but the producers of each season display their own vision and adapt their production to contemporary trends and demands. A new vision and a complete departure from the old approaches is promised with the launch of every season. In fact, there are no old approaches either as every new season aims to erase the memories of any history. Every new season crowns itself as the only legitimate season of Shiatsu on Netflix. Despite this relentless reinvention, all seasons of our series have had quite a lot of success proved by generous audiences and large followings. One of the seasons even received a special award, an official recognition at home in Japan. But, the next season of our series was dominated by an independent producer who unexpedtedly won the popularity award outside of Japan. Although he did not enjoy any official recognition at home in Japan, this season's producer seems to have managed to outshine all previous seasons. Moreover, the vision of this season is so popular in the Western Hemisphere that the general public tends to forget that it was only one season of a series. Currently, the Shiatsu series has become a victim of its own success both in Japan and abroad. In Japan, the season that won the official recognition award is seeing its popularity decline sharply especially after its charismatic producer left this world. Although they have made efforts, the producers have not succeeded and will never succeed in finding another charismatic producer of the same stature. Both in Japan and abroad, the Shiatsu series was so successful that it inspired a myriad of independent productions under the same name. But as the series gained global success, it also faced challenges with maintaining its authenticity and still waiting for the emergence of fresh charismatic figures. These days we're witnessing a large influx of independent productions under the same name, sometimes attempting to faithfully reinterpret a past season but often diluting the original concept. With this oversaturation, it seems that Netflix has abandoned plans for producing a new season and we must turn to local productions for our Shiatsu fix. I have a personal superstition about New Year's Day...that what you do on that day will fill your Year. (Housework is out of the question!)

I started my day with 100 repetitions of Deep Ki Breathing inspired by practice of Sempei Geoff Ritchie whilst Dolphins swam in front of me. Quite a workout. You need good posture to breathe and breathing creates good posture.

Not a bad thing to fill the Year with. 😀

Using the Jo (staff or stick) in Aikido is a great way to understand the art. It also represents flexibility, flowing with what is and intuition.

Great conditions for our ki breathing by the Ocean this morning. Although cloudy the sunrise was stunning!
Deeply relaxing to allow the breath to power the body and free the mind. Next one is December 3rd. Arrive 10 mins before sunrise. All welcome.
