Vale Merle Thornton - you were a trailblazer

Merle Thornton, who fought for the right for women to drink at public bars in Queensland, dies aged 93 In 1965 Merle Thornton AM and a friend chained themselves to a bar at the Regatta Hotel in Brisbane in protest of a ban on women drinking in public bars. It became regarded as a pivotal moment in women's liberation in Australia.

In March Kathryn Aston-Mourney was the recipient of the Soroptimist International of Geelong's education award at this year's CoGG Women in Community Life Awards. Tonight Kathryn came to speak to our members about her work in science and in the community. She is a very busy woman and it was a pleasure to hear her story.

Wendy and I attended a Flowwa flower mindfulness workshop today. Interesting and good fun. New experiences are always welcome 😀

We held our Australia's biggest morning tea this morning - a small group but with donations from all members we raised a decent sum to send off to help combat cancer.

So good to be back at the English conversation classes at the Gordon.

Morning tea at Betty's Laneway - some great catching up

After the SI Victoria meeting we were hosted by the Shepparton members to dinner and a 'gin evening'. What a fun night. Thank you to Liz for hosting, Denise for organising dinner and all the Shepparton members for making us feel so welcome. Even our Soroptimisters had a great night 😀

Just spent the weekend attending the SI Victoria meeting and social event in Shepparton. The meeting was amazing. Apart from the guest speakers Kath Mazzella and Dr Donnell Davis it was wonderful to meet Soroptimists from other clubs and hear all about the work that is happening throughout the state. Great to meet like minded women - together we are stronger.

After busy day yesterday here we are at the Lara Community Market, 71 stalls and vibrant energy - come and see all that is on offer 😀

We delivered over 400 'days for girls' kits at five schools in Viqueque, Timor. It has been a wonderful experience and very positive feedback from the girls who received the kits and training last year! Very happy with the results. Made very welcome at the schools. Thank you to Patrice for being our ambassador.
