The Montague whaler is re-floated after a twenty year journey, originally found by Vaughan McGillivery in Williamstown, with restoration started the vessel was offered to WBBC by Peter Doyle of RGYC.
Bill and Paul proposed the concept to the WBBC committee in 2020 and the restoration was re-started at the Fyansford papermill with the help of an injection of funds from WBBC.
The following year the whaler was moved to the WBBC workshop.
During this year the club also recieved a grant from COGG via their community engagement programme.
Lowered into the water today November 4th 2024.
Thanks to all volunteers involved and in particular, Vaughan, Alan, Bill, Peter, Chris, Kym and Paul. WBBC members, COGG.
History continues.

The WBBC Montague Whaler was flipped over by crane last week. It was a matter of a couple of centimetres to spare to get the crane boom in the doorway. All went well with no damage. Now she’s upright once again.
Thanks to the efforts of club members, restoring an old Montague Whaler, one of three of its kind operating in Australian waters. The whalers once played a key role in Australia’s naval history and were used in conflict, also for transferring people from the ship to the shore. They were also used at Gallipoli during World War I.
The whaler itself, brought to the club by members of the Royal Geelong Yacht Club Skiff Builders, was determined to be built in New Zealand in 1942 from native Kauri timber and then transported to Australia on a New Zealand warship. Once inflatable boats were introduced in the 1970s, the boat was retired from active service.
Following its retirement, Williamstown naval cadets used the vessel for training purposes before it fell into a state of disrepair.
The boat club’s members ultimately needed additional funds to complete the restoration program, despite putting hundreds of hours into the project.
The club successfully applied for a Community Grant from the City of Greater Geelong, obtaining $10,000 as a result. Expected completion late 2023. Once completed, the club plans to invite interested community members to learn how to row it.
To row such a vessel involves skill and timing, while working together,
Teaching the important skill of teamwork.
A unique way of bringing people together, sharing a common goal, encouraging social interaction in a healthy way.
Slipping Cradle:
The slip at WBBC has 2 cradles for members to use for boat maintenance once a year with the fee being part of the membership. Additional slipping for members is available but is subject to an additional daily charge.
Western Beach Boat Club currently manages a grid of 112 swing moorings to the west of Geelong’s Cunningham Pier on behalf of Parks Victoria. It currently has moorings available for new members.
