Welcome to our new series of posts “YOU SHOULD KNOW” where we dive into the nitty gritty subjects of the nail industry!

So, what is onycholysis?
Onycholysis is the spontaneous separation of the fingernail or toenail from the nail bed (see second slide for an example)

What causes onycholysis?
Onycholysis is generally caused by severe trauma to the nail. This can be from knocking your nail with great force, allergic reactions to dangerous nail products or aggressive manicures. Onycholysis can also be caused by underlying medical conditions such as: thyroid disease, infections within the body and rarely some types of cancer. Onycholysis can also be caused by skin conditions including: various forms of eczema, psoriasis, and lichen planus. It can even be caused by pregnancy!

How do we treat onycholysis?
Nails affected by onycholysis need to be kept short with no product applied. Unfortunately, this does mean you may have to go without an enhancement for a little bit, it’s okay girl it won’t be forever!

Onycholysis is more common than you think, if you’re ever concerned, contact your nail technician to have your nails removed to check the integrity and health of your natural nail.

Have you ever placed your hand in your technicians lamp and felt like your nails are on fire!? Girl same! Let me tell you why.

Heat spikes occur when polymerization (curing) of a product happens too quickly. Polymerization is molecules rubbing together to harden the enhancement, due to the quick rubbing motion excessive heat is released in a short period of time, which in turn creates a heat spike.

How can we prevent a heat spike?
Placing your hand slightly inside of the lamp and slowly inching forward helps the polymerization process occur at a much slower rate.
REMEMBER: you can remove your hand from the lamp if a heat spike becomes too much to bare. Wait for the heat spike to subside and try again. This being said, ensure you are curing your nails for the full 60 seconds needed as to avoid under-cured gel.
You can reduce the likelihood of getting a heat spike by going to a technician who cares for your natural nails. A technician who files your nails gently is protecting your nail plate from thinning and preventing injuries to the sensitive tissues affected by the heat spike.

Why are some clients more prone to heat spikes?
Clients who have naturally thin nails may be more prone to heat spikes as the polymerization occurs closer to the nail bed, compared to someone with thicker nails.
This also goes for clients who remove their enhancements aggressively as you remove layers of your natural nails when you rip them off.
Clients who have been exposed to overly aggressive filing of the nail will more than likely experience a heat spike.

Heat spikes are super common but easily prevented with proper care.
