To coincide with 2023 Geelong Design Week, Geelong Gallery and Barwon Water collaborated for a fascinating visit to Murrk Ngubitj Yarram Yaluk (‘headwaters of continuous flowing river’ in Wadawurrung language).

Attendees were able to learn more about Barwon Water’s current project to transform the former Bellarine Basin site. Working closely with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and the wider community, the project seeks to reimagine the space and enhance the unique and natural features of the Bellarine Peninsula using sustainable design and management practices.

After a tour of the site, local artist Ryan Brearley led a drawing activity exploring the natural landscape.

Thank you to everyone who attended!

Situated amongst the rolling hills surrounding the township of Deloraine (Mid North Tasmania) lies a small mid 1800’s cottage. Owned by the same family for three generations the building and it’s garden frame views of the surrounding paddocks, Bonneys Creek that runs through the property and Quamby Bluff. Now owned by the artist Deborah Brearley the home is being brought back to life and will be the venue for your two day workshop (with third day optional for participants staying longer).
I will lead the teaching with the focus of the camp on LIGHT. With careful observation of tone, shape and edge you will be able to translate the crisp morning, illuminating objects on the sill of the sash windows, and the warm golden afternoon of the hills against the little pink cottage and it’s three chimneys.
You will primarily work with drawing materials, graphite, charcoal etc but demonstrations will also go into considerations of colour and using paint. You will be encouraged to also ‘play’ with colour if you choose.
For those participants able to put aside a little more time, the third day will be spent ‘en plein air’. You will be guided in simple ways of working outdoors, and capturing the beautiful light of northern Tasmania. DM OR EMAIL RYAN [email protected] IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING

Some quick watercolour studies of the sky as the sun set the other night, working wet in wet and charging with other colours. A couple of the ones I was really happy with.

Starting to get back into some work...after the last few weeks of readjusting of no classes, having time at home to really get some gardening done and moving everything around in my studio, I can begin to get creative again. A quick warm up, simple subject and just black and white.

Found a note about Augustus Johns colours that he used for a series of paintings he did outdoors around 1910. It always is amazing how far you can push so few colours. The painting is a Johns, Lily at Tan-y-grisiau (The Orange Apron) c1913 Private Collection

Last class for the year, making gesso for silverpoint, making our own pastels and demonstrating silverpoint, the alchemy of art! Thank you to all my students for another fun filled, interesting, funny, and challenging year! Without you all and your support and trust in me and my teaching I would not be anywhere near fulfilled and as happy as I am. This year has marked amazing growth and development of each of you, and I am proud of you all. Next year will mark, (I hope I’ve got my dates right) 20 years since the Thursday morning Art classes began. So thank you to mum who worked very hard building them up and supporting me as she handed on the baton. I look forward to another successful year, starting with the watercolour workshop next month, and wish you all a happy and safe Christmas. Ryan xo (thanks to Silvana for the photos!)
