Exitleft is one of the state’s leading performing arts studios with a focus on musical theatre and contemporary performance styles. We run after-school classes for students from 4 to 18 years, school holiday workshops, concerts and performances and stage at least eight theatre shows a year.

We are quite flexible. You might be a gap year or uni student looking for casual work or you could be an emerging artist looking to pursue a performing arts career. Maybe you are a skilled practitioner looking for a senior position or someone with a performing arts background and teaching qualifications looking at a career shift and wanting to stretch your artistic wings working with students who are keen to learn.

Vale Marilyn Smith

Marilyn has been one of the biggest musical influences on my life.

I was blessed to have her as my singing teacher at the Conservatorium of Music, when she returned to Tasmania to care for family after a professional career in England performing in more than sixty Operas.

That student/teacher relationship grew into
a lifetime friendship, with Marilyn mentoring and supporting me when I first started teaching singing, supporting my choice to open into a full studio and recommending me as one of the people to see for young performers.

I still remember her simple but sage words and her belief that any of voice teaching should “do no harm”. This philosophy underpins everything I do and influences my studios long-term approach to vocal tuition.

Whenever I needed advice or help with complex or unusual vocal need in an advanced student, Marilyn would happily pop in and provide a different perspective or give suggestions that helped them find a way through their issues.

Possibly my favourite highlight was working with Marilyn when she performed as the Mother Abess in ExitLeft’s 2012 Sound of Music. Her rendition of ‘Climb Every Mountain’ brought the house down every night.

In her final months she was still thinking of others. My final time seeing her was for afternoon tea, when she gifted me her collection of Musical Theatre books and some English Art Song (the area in which I specialised with her). I will treasure these gifts forever.

Marilyn was both humble and yet a leader of music making in Tasmania with an influence that spans the globe.

I will miss her greatly.
