“The hotel’s storytelling theme wasn’t limited to the front of our hotel room; every aspect of our stay was seen through the eyes of someone from the past.
As a history buff, I was ecstatic by the thought of the scheduled activities to do. We were lucky enough to take two tours on this short trip, the Sticky Stones & Secrets Tour, and the Viewfinder Tour, and they blew me away.
Hosted by Jessica, an illustrious and passionate Storyteller, we first walked through the hotel’s Evolve Bar, a quaint spot dedicated to whiskey and is fully decked out with million-year-old fossils.

Rodney Croome is an LGBTQIA+ rights activist, academic, author and spokesperson, as well as one of the 114 Tasmanian characters that adorn the hallways of MACq 01.
Rodney took a leading role in establishing anti-homophobia education, as well as fighting for anti-discrimination laws. He fronted the successful campaign to decriminalise homosexuality in the state. Rodney would go on to become one of the first vocal supporters of marriage equality in Australia.
We celebrate this Fighting Believer’s courage and commitment, not only during the TasPride Festival, but all year round. We are so proud to be able to highlight local heroes and changemakers such as Rodney Croome.

"The name reads more like a complicated wifi password than a luxury hotel in Hobart (named after the original shipping shed on the site, known as Macquarie 1). Still, if you’ve had a friend or family member venture down to Tasmania recently they’ve probably mentioned MACq 01. It’s quickly become a destination hotel with epic views of the River Derwent, Mount Wellington, and Constitution Dock offering some of the best seafood in the world brought by Antarctic seas.
A story-telling hotel by name and nature, each of its 114 luxury rooms is named after a great Tasmanian, past and present. Look inside and you’ll find one of our favourite restaurants in the city, the Old Wharf Restaurant led by Head Chef Alvin Sim, a whisky-tasting room where you can try some of the land’s greatest drams, and daily story-telling tours that build character on the stunning visuals of the hotel."

The breeze along Hobart's waterfront carries a thousand captivating stories of those that were here before us - a cast of remarkable characters, each with an intriguing story to tell. In this place, the Mouheneenner people fished and forged dreams in the Derwent shallows; the first Europeans set foot ashore Van Diemen's Land and an industry was borne amid the bustle of Hunter Island. Today, this precinct is home to MACq 01 where the stories of these colourful characters are shared in a setting of informal luxury. This is a storytelling hotel.
Opened in June 2017, MACq 01 is one of Hobart’s most unique luxury hotels. Each room tells a story of one of 114 characters who have influenced the evolution of the Tasmanian culture, ranging from native people to inventors, explorers, convicts and heroes. A team of full time storytellers will ensure you leave with a true and meaningful connection to place.
