1. It takes years to get the assessment.

2. The GP has to reapply for the authority every 6 months.
Not in usual circumstances, most people are granted a 3 year authority from the date they saw their psychiatrist - this allows a psychiatry review every 3 years as the minimum although some people have much more support from their psychiatrist than this by choice.

3. It costs more than $3000 to get the diagnosis.
It is usually much less than this with Medicare rebates and even more affordable if you are willing to wait to see the one Psychiatrist who is working hard to bulk bill most of their Tasmanian patients, costs can be discussed at your initial appointment with ADHD Doctors Tasmania.

4. My GP can’t refer me to the Psychiatrist because my GP doesn’t want to write authority scripts for ADHD.
Each GP will let you know their situation but if this is the case, the good news is that the GP can make that referral and nominate another service such as ADHD Doctors Tasmania to follow up. Alternatively they could refer you across to a service such as ADHD Doctors Tasmania to write a more comprehensive referral and you would have your referral and follow up all in the one place.

5. I am already prescribed Medicinal Cannabis so I can’t pass a urine drug test to have any authority scripts for ADHD so my choices would be limited.
Some people need other medications alongside their medication for ADHD. Having other medications on authority is legal so long as all your doctors know your regular medications when they are making their decisions. A urine dug test is quite routinely part of the application process and is expected to show drugs you are legally prescribed.
