Welcome to a new year of rankings!

2024 has kicked off well for the Tossers, with a World Athletics Javelin event in Hobart on Saturday. The event bought out the best with the Tossers, with Liam Shelton (61.74m), Caleb Kirkpatrick (47.94m) and Oliver Vince (43.15m) all throwing PB’s in the event. Hamish Peacock took the win with an impressive 73.72m. At the other end of the ground Shot Put was on, in the Open age group, Kaity Fassina throwing 13.40m to kick her year off, while Oliver Vince backed up his personal best in Jav with a PB in Shot, throwing 12.19m.

While this was going on in Hobart, the State Combined Event Championships was held in Launceston, where Xavie Davie was jumping up a weight to the 5kg Shot, and he barely missed a beat, throwing 12.11m, followed by a solid 47.38m in Jav.

Hammer is where the competition has really heated up in recent weeks, with Jackson Mellor now declaring himself a dual Discus/Hammer thrower and lighting up the circle. Jacko opened the year with a 54.23m bomb, but the challenge was answered, with the cannonball Caleb throwing a PB of 56.16m. These two giants are guaranteed to deliver some ripper results as we head to the pointy end of the season.

Our Master Tossers are busy preparing for the Nationals in Hobart at the end of March. Cathy McKeown has delivered some great results in Hammer (38.83m), Shot (10.86m) and Discus (30.31m) in the lead up to the Masters Championship events, which get underway with the State Throws Pentathlon Championships on the 11th February. And how good is it to see Michael Mullarvey back in action! Mullarvey missed the 2022-2023 season due to elbow surgery (the fate of the aging Javelin thrower), but he’s back in action this season and working hard on getting the tip of that 700g Jav to land 😊

For the Tossers this week, Interclub is on in Launceston Wednesday night, with Hammer & Shot on the program, while in Hobart there’s Javelin, Shot & Discus kicking off at 9am Saturday.

Tassie's newest 50m Tosser!

Congratulations to Xavier Davie on throwing 50.04m at the Australian All Schools in Perth. Xavier has improved his Javelin a whopping 14m over the past 12 months to become our latest 50m thrower. Not too bad at all for a multi-eventer 😉

Results from today's Heavy Weight meet at the Domain are now available. Special thanks to Phil Hniat & Stuart Corney for officiating the events & Cathy McKeown for getting it organised for us.

Huw Peacock again delivered some excellent results, setting provisional Australian Records in both the 100lb & 56lb implements. Huw threw 5.05m with the 100lb, improving the previous mark of 4.64m set by Nigel Skurrie in 2021, and followed up with a 10.08m with the 56lb implement, improving the previous mark of 10.02m (Warren Button, 2020). Provisional Tasmanian Records were set by Michael Higgs (100lb), Tracy Canham (100lb), Cathy McKeown (56lb) & Joy Sutcliffe (56lb). Congrats to everyone who had a throw today, it was great to see a couple of new Tossers come along and join in.

Additional implements have been ordered which will enable us to hold Heavy Weight Pentathlons, we will advertise dates as soon as they arrive.

Today, the first 100lb Super Heavyweight competition was held in Tasmania, with a small but enthusiastic number of Tossers competing at the Domain. It was the first opportunity for all to have a go at throwing the big ball (which weighs in just over 45kg for those who like the metric system of weight) and the Tossers delivered some excellent Results.

Huw Peacock led the way in his first event as a Tas Masters member. Huw threw beyond the Australian M30 Record in the 100lb event, and equalled the mark in the 56lb event, while Cathy McKeown (W50) and Tracy Canham (W45) set inaugural Tasmanian Records (all subject to ratification). Full results in the images below.

RESULTS from today's Throws Meet are available by following the link below. Thanks to those who came along and supported the Tossers heading to Oceania's in June, and special thanks to those who helped officiate across all events, especially to Phil Hniat. And to Tas Masters/Aths South for the use of the equipment.

Despite the cold (really cold!) weather, there was some excellent results recorded across all events. First up was the big P, who launched the Javelin beyond the 70m mark, suggesting something big might be on the way at the Oceania's in Mackay where the temperature will reach at least double figures. Bec Mathers was the best of the Women with a throw just shy of her Tas Record.

With Huw Peacock feeling a little tired after celebrating his new Tas Masters Membership last night, Caleb Kirkpatrick was left to take honours in the Men's Hammer, with Rach Hosie taking out the Women's event. In the Discus, Jacko Mellor stepped up to the open weight & was the best of the Men, with Rach Hosie delivering a solid 37m throw to take out the Women's event.

In the Shot Put, new Tosser Kaity Fassina stole the show on debut. Kaity threw a solid series of 13m+ throws in her first comp, finishing with a best of 13.61m, with Jacko Mellor taking out the Men's event with 13.43m. To finish the day, Masters athletes participated in the Weight Throw, including the new 56lb Super Weight. Michael Higgs dropped a 7.68m bomb, with Michael Mullarvey & Cathy McKeown also throwing themselves into the TMA records with the super-sized ball. Special thanks to Mullarvey for sharing his new toy.

It was a sensational start to the season from the Tossers today with State Records, Club Records & Personal Bests galore!

Hammer was first up with 13yo Zachary Kirkpatrick stealing the limelight with a huge 6m PB to improve his Tasmanian U14 Record in the event to 52.17m. Not to be totally outshone by his little brother, Cannonball Caleb delivered a PB with the 6kg implement of 56.94m. Coach Huw Peacock was on site supporting both his athletes throughout the event, showing why he was recently named Tasmania’s Emerging Coach of the Year.

Discus was next up with another of Tassie’s talented young Coaches producing the goods. Natalia Leszcynski & Indy Brideson both produced a lifetime best in the event, with Natalia throwing 38.62m and Indy back up over the 30m mark with a strong 32.35m. Jackson Mellor had his last throw in competition with the 1.5kg Discus (at least until he turns 50!) and finished in style with a 49.01 PB, belting his own club record in the event. Both Natalia & Indy have been training with Jackson in recent months, with today’s season opener results from all three athletes an excellent testament to Jackson’s progress as both an athlete and coach. BIG things to come!

Well done Tossers 💪👊
