What is a Heart Health Check - Heart Foundation 06/05/2024

❤️ HEART HEALTH WEEK 6/5 - 12/5 ❤️

Heart Week is Australia’s national heart health awareness week held in May each year. It provides an opportunity for the Australian public and health professionals to start a conversation about heart health and take positive steps to reduce their heart disease risk.

A Heart Health Check is a 20-minute check-up with your GP to assess your risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next five years.

As part of the check, your doctor will ask you about your lifestyle, medical and family history. They will also check your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Your GP will use this information to estimate your risk of a heart attack or stroke. More importantly, they will discuss the steps you can take to lower your risk.

If you are aged 45 and over and do not already have heart disease, we recommend you see your doctor for a Medicare-subsidised Heart Health Check. Some people may be eligible earlier, including First Nations peoples from 30 years, and from 35 years for people living with diabetes.

It is estimated that 1 in 70 Australians live with coeliac disease, yet concerningly approximately 80% of these individuals remain undiagnosed. Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action 16/11/2023

Cervical Cancer Elimination Day

Each year the World Health Organisation joins advocates around the world to commemorate a landmark Day of Action for Cervical Cancer Elimination and welcome groundbreaking new initiatives to end this devastating disease. The global movement to eliminate cervical cancer is driven by the energy, passion and momentum of communities, partners and individuals working towards catalyzing change.

HPV vaccination plays an essential role in achieving and maintaining cervical cancer elimination in Australia.

Since the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was introduced into Australia’s National Immunisation Program in 2007, a significant amount of cervical disease has been prevented.

Every Australian can do their part to help reach this incredible milestone. We can reach cervical cancer elimination by ensuring eligible people:

🔹Are vaccinated against HPV
🔹Participate in regular cervical screening
🔹Can access early and appropriate medical treatment when required.

Talk to your younger family members about whether they have been vaccinated for HPV and make sure that those you love who are eligible for cervical screening are taking part.

For more information see the website below 👇🏼

Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action 17 November marks a historic movement of the first time the world committed to eliminate a cancer.

COVID cases on the rise 📈

Chief medical officer Paul Kelly has warned that Australia is in the grips of its "third COVID wave this year" with cases rising across the country.

In the week ending 27 October, 6550 cases of COVID-19 were reported nationally, an average of 936 cases per day and a marked increase of 23.6 per cent on the week prior. There were 16 deaths and 1239 Australians hospitalised with COVID-19 – the highest number of hospitalisations since July 2023.

Victoria’s acting chief health officer has suggested that people consider wearing masks again, as community transmission surges. While isolation is no longer a legal requirement, it is strongly recommended that people stay home after a positive test result to protect others, particularly those more susceptible to severe disease.

02/11/2023

Now that we're in grass pollen season, people are reminded to protect themselves and others from the risk of epidemic thunderstorm asthma.

People with hay fever are at increased risk of asthma, with symptoms that include wheezing, shortness of breath and coughing.

People with asthma or asthma symptoms should visit their GP to ensure a current asthma action plan, and on high risk forecast days, stay indoors, closing windows and doors, and turning off air conditioners.
