Northern Motorcycle Riders Association of Tasmania (inc)

Club History The Tasmanian MRA was formed in 1980. In 2007, the MRA was restructured into three autonomous groups (Northwest, North and South).

Its original purpose was to confront the Tasmanian Government and the Motor Accidents Insurance Board (MAIB) over rapidly increasing insurance premiums. This three year battle was won in 1983 when the government agreed to peg motorcycle premiums to the same level as cars. The MRA was responsible during this time for lobbying for and helping to set up the Tasmanian Motorcycle Rider Training Scheme,

It was a beautiful day for our monthly ride today, even though it was a bit chilly to start off. We had 13 riders join the group, setting off from Launceston for Bridport for a coffee stop, then heading on to Weldborough Hotel, via Gladstone, thanks Kristy and the team for a beautiful lunch ๐Ÿฅฐ. We headed back via Scottsdale, some saying their goodbyes from there, with the main group having a blast over the sideling. Back into town and then homeward bound. 350kms for me for the day, thanks to everyone who came along for the ride.

What do you do at traffic lights?

Stopped or stopping at traffic lights can be dangerous for motorcyclists. We have all heard or seen of stories of bike riders being rear ended.

As you approach traffic lights what are you seeing? Did you see the lights change to green. If not they are "stale". What I mean is that they can change at anytime. Starting thinking about your point of no return. How close is that car behind you, will it be able to stop?

So you are able to stop, pull up behind the driver of the vehicle in front of you and at least a bike length back. This protects you if the vehicle rolls back but just as importantly gives you room to move forward and to the right to get out of the way of that vehicle that is not stopping in time. Stay in gear until you have protection behind you. (a vehicle not another bike, has stopped behind you.)

When you take off on the green, clear your blind spot, then look to the right as you enter the intersection. As you continue through look to left. When on roads with multiple lanes, if the lane doesn't have a vehicle stopped in it, it is a potential danger.

I have seen vehicles run red lights seconds after they changed. Remember good old Tassie does not have redlight cameras so unfortunately orange and red runners are pretty prevalent. Many commit to accelerating through an orange well before the lights by the time they are crossing the line it is well and truly red.

In the city use other vehicles as protection. Much rather the redlight runner hits the vehicle on my right or left than me.

Remember safe riding doesn't happen by accident!
