I just returned from Wallaby Creek festival and it was such a delight!. I was finishing my Hula Dance Workshop and sitting in the corner was an old lady (Kupuna) who watched the class, and we had a chat afterwards. I was sharing about how in the west we don't always have the level of commitment required to learn in this lineage. However, whether it is watching the hula, listening to oli, or dancing in a workshop. In such small amounts of time, the thing I pray to convey is connection. For them to feel it. Quite often hearing the voice or dance of the ancestors has the ability to move the uhane (spirit within). People report to me they get moved to tears and they have never experienced that before. Imagine what this does to us, when we use it in our practice! Join me this Sunday for the first of the series of Power of the Voice: 8am Qld time

My background from my Yoga Teacher Training was doing Kirtan (and I LOVED it), which is Indian chanting, rejoicing into a state of bliss and connection to the divine. It's both a purification and devotion all in one. The thing is, that you can blend into the background in Kirtan.

Hawaiian Oli, demands that you access that place of deep, deep knowing, that guttural ancestral voice that is buried so deep within, I witness people are shocked when it begins to bubble up. Those that use and operate from the intellect struggle with oli, as once you train the mind to repeat the Hawaiian words, you HAVE to step out of the way, lose the paper and allow for the connection to take place. It's an announcement to all things in this universe, you cannot hide or shy away in this moment. It is yours to own that you have arrived and you brought them (your ancestors) with you. Finding your voice, is powerful, that is why so many have been silenced for so many generations. As when you reclaim it, your voice heals.
