With most of our interactions with services online these days IT security has never been so important... History shows us that the weakest link in a cybersecurity chain is the user. Today I want to talk about Passwords, and how small changes to the way we create our passwords can make huge impacts to the security of your account. So even if you have a lot of CCTV camera's around your house, if your Wi-Fi or DVR password is weak then you could still be vulnerable

I see the three most common password mistakes are;
1. Using the same password across multiple accounts.
2. Using easily guessable passwords like "password1" and such.
3. Not using spaces and special characters in your password.

I am going to use an online password strength checker that will approximate how long it will take to crack passwords (This test shows the results of trying to crack a given password using a "standard" computer, if hackers are using dedicated rigs for this then it will make it even faster for them)

Here we go;
password - This will take 1 second for a brute force attack
password1 - This will take 4 seconds
password1! - This will take 4 minutes
P455w0rd1! - This will take 3 minutes
Passwords Rule - This will take 3 hours
Passwords are cool - This will take 4 months
My password is strong - This will take 24 years
my password is cool! - This will take "Centuries"

So you can see that the longer a password is it is typically harder to "crack".

Some of the things you can do to improve your password security are as follows;
1. Use pass phrases instead of a single word (space bar is great 😀)
2. Use a password manager. They are great and make it so you only need to remember the 1 password but can have a different password for every account.
3. Personally i think the best thing you can do is use 2FA (2 Factor Authentication (So even if a hacker manages to get your password, they wouldn't be able to get the second part of your access request as it is on your phone and the number changes every 60 seconds)
