Stalls For All

DIRECT ACTION GETS THE GOODS.

Direct from the Staff Hub: after receiving the Stalls for All report, recommendations, and immense pressure from the campaign and UMSU Q***r Political Action Collective, and discussions with representatives in Chancellery, The University of Melbourne has decided to implement 500 more all-gender bathrooms.

This is a huge win for trans, intersex and gender diverse students - we’ve got out there and made a loud and clear case that all-gender bathrooms are not only necessary, but urgent. Big thanks to the University for hearing our voices, and acknowledging them in a policy response.

Next is to ensure these converted bathrooms are properly accessible, that enough of them are multi-stall, and that they’re in line with recommendations in research, and from q***r students themselves, and that enough high-traffic buildings have all-gender bathrooms.

Thanks to your invaluable support so far - the fight’s not over!

Bathrooms are for everyone; not just cis people. University of Melbourne need more all-gender bathrooms. Brought to you by UMSU Q***r

Some pics from the Union House Makeover/Takeover on Wednesday! Wow, what an event. Managed to get heaps and heaps of signatures for our petition, and ignited lots of discussion about the lack of all-gender bathrooms on campus.

We had funky beats from DJ Fizzi, sweet Turkish delight and bliss balls thanks to the Food Co-op, and beautiful, fun, q***r and vibrant bathrooms, thanks to all the volunteers in the UMSU Q***r Political Action Collective. Most of all, we made Union House’s level 1 bathrooms all-gender for the day, and started a conversation about trans and intersex rights on campus.

Together, we sent four messages to The University of Melbourne and students:

1. All-gender bathrooms, in practice, differ little from gendered bathrooms. For most, one’s bathroom experience doesn’t change in an all-gender bathroom - and yet all-gender bathrooms make a world of difference to trans, intersex and gender diverse students.

2. All-gender bathrooms are easy to implement. We converted the bathrooms, and we’re just students!

3. When everyone’s included, bathrooms can be fun spaces to be in.

4. Students care about bathroom justice, and want equal access to bathrooms for *all* students.
